The Rainmaker: USA Network’s Legal Thriller Sets Premiere Date – Get Ready for August 15!

The US Network has announced when “The Rainmaker” will be airing, adapting John Grisham’s novel for television. Previously, this story was brought to life as a 1997 film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Matt Damon. The television adaptation of “The Rainmaker” is part of the USA Network’s strategy to increase their involvement in scripted programming, offering a fresh take on the legal drama genre with deeply personal conflicts at its core.

Back in June 2024, it was initially announced that the television version of “The Rainmaker” would premiere on August 15. This legal thriller will make its debut at 10 PM Eastern Time on USA Network. A week after its initial broadcast, episodes will be accessible for streaming on Peacock.

What To Know About The Rainmaker TV Adaptation

It Blends The Professional & The Personal

In “The Rainmaker,” the main character is Rudy Baylor, played by Milo Callaghan known for his role in Rivals. Having just graduated from law school, Rudy takes on the challenging task of going against the esteemed Leo Drummond, portrayed by John Slattery from Mad Men. Additionally, he must confront his former classmate Sarah Plankmore, played by Madison Iseman from Jumanji: The Next Level. Other cast members in this USA Network production include P.J. Byrne, Dan Fogler, Wade Briggs, and Robyn Cara.

The plot thickens as Rudy, along with his boss (represented by Lana Parrilla from ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’), and her messy assistant, uncover two intertwined conspiracies. Their discoveries merely intensify the enigma surrounding the demise of their client’s child. True to its thriller genre, ‘The Rainmaker’ is produced by Blumhouse Television. Michael Seitzman, known for creating the drama series ‘Code Black’, assumes the role of showrunner and executive producer in adapting John Grisham’s book into this production.

Our Take On The Rainmaker

Legal Dramas Are Welcome

The classic film Rainmaker was released during a period when cinema-going had a different flavor. Essentially, it was a straightforward suspenseful movie, not overly flashy or extravagant, which could easily fit into the regular pattern at the box office rather than standing out as an unusual exception. Unfortunately, The Rainmaker didn’t perform as well as The Firm, with the latter earning six times its production budget, but the legal thriller genre was experiencing growth overall.

In the 2020s, legal dramas have taken a backseat on both the big screen and TV, with only a few exceptions like “The Lincoln Lawyer” and “Matlock.” However, the upcoming release of “The Rainmaker,” set for summer’s end, could potentially rejuvenate the genre. While it may not regain the heights it once held in the 1990s, it certainly has the potential to revitalize things a bit.
