New YouTube update removes support for newest iPod Touch

Once more, YouTube has revamped its mobile application, taking away compatibility with an iconic Apple device – the iPod Touch.

In the days when portable media players ruled supreme, I found myself completely captivated by none other than the Apple iPod Touch – the undisputed champion among touchscreen devices on the market.

From its debut in 2007 up until May 2013, Apple managed to sell more than 100 million units of this device worldwide. Initially popular among customers for allowing kids to watch videos and listen to music while on the move without needing a smartphone, Apple ceased production on May 10, 2022.

Since Apple has stopped updating the device beyond iOS 15, iPod Touch users have lost access to a widely used app as of Tuesday, June 3.

YouTube app no longer works on iPod Touch

As reported by MacRumors, the latest version of YouTube is only compatible with iOS 16 and won’t function on devices that rely solely on a traditional touchscreen interface.

Although you can still use YouTube, which is owned by Google, via a web browser, it doesn’t offer the same level of experience compared to using the dedicated app.

Apart from the iPod Touch, several other devices have also been discontinued for this app. This includes the iPhone 6S, 7, and initial iPhone SE models, which can no longer run the app. Users with older iPad versions, such as the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4, are experiencing a similar predicament since these tablets are also no longer supported.

Beyond discontinuing compatibility with older devices, YouTube has been actively enhancing their website and mobile application with new features.

In May, YouTube announced plans to integrate Google Lens into Shorts, enabling viewers to recognize objects within the videos they’re watching. Additionally, the platform is developing innovative methods for displaying advertisements, such as employing Gemini AI to pinpoint high-interest moments in videos.
