Finding a suitable new display for your computer is quite a daunting challenge. Not only are they not inexpensive (and it’s unlikely this will change by 2025), but there are an overwhelming number of them to choose from. Some excel at office work, others at gaming, and some can handle both tasks gracefully. At Computex, the annual computing convention held in Taipei, Taiwan, several companies demonstrated their latest displays. Here are the screens that stood out at the event, worthy of your attention not just figuratively but literally.
OLED is getting better and better
OLED screens can create breathtaking visuals due to their deep blacks and vivid colors, but they have had concerns about burn-in in the past. This issue could potentially ruin your gaming experience by displaying remnants of previous images, like a persistent taskbar at the bottom of the screen during intense gameplay sessions. However, advancements like MSI’s OLED Care have significantly reduced this problem. In fact, a demonstration monitor running on OLED Care 2.0 technology has been operating continuously for three years with an eight-hour daily static image, along with about an hour of burn-in prevention each day, and no signs of burn-in have appeared. The upcoming versions of these monitors will come equipped with OLED Care 3.0, an even more refined version of the technology. In essence, OLED screens are now a reliable choice for top-notch visual experiences.
MSI MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50 – Hyper-fast Refresh and AI OLED Care
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say, this monitor has some serious perks that are hard to ignore. With a spacious 27-inch, 1440p display, it can refresh up to an incredible 500 times per second – that’s 500 frames! If you’re into eSports, this speed is going to be your new best friend. Plus, it boasts VESA ClearMR 21000 and DisplayHDR True Black 500 certifications. The former means the motion on this screen is incredibly crisp – ClearMR 21000 is the highest rating, so you know it’s top-notch. As for the latter, a 500 rating might seem mid-range compared to others that go up to True Black 1000, but let me tell you, this screen still delivers an excellent color and contrast performance. So, if you’re looking for a screen that offers both speed and clarity in gaming, this one is definitely worth checking out.
The screen’s color spectrum encompasses approximately 99% of the DCI-P3 range, but MSI has not yet provided specific percentages for Adobe RGB and sRGB color domains.
This model also includes OLED Care 3.0 and MSI’s innovative AI Care Sensor. The AI Care Sensor is a camera located at the base of the screen, monitored by its built-in Neural Processing Unit. This sensor can identify a person standing approximately 1.2 meters from the screen in just 0.2 seconds, causing the screen to automatically switch off when you leave and turn back on when you return. MSI anticipates that the resumption time will become quicker with future software updates. To demonstrate their faith in these features and the burn-in testing, MSI also provides a three-year burn-in warranty.
Concerns about privacy are valid when it comes to devices equipped with active cameras, but you have the option to completely disable the Care Sensor feature if preferred. MSI assures that no images are saved onto the monitor, and nothing is transmitted to a server. The data gathered by the camera is kept onboard only and discarded as quickly as it’s being updated.
Regarding connection options, this screen features a DisplayPort 2.1, capable of delivering 80Gbps bandwidth, and it has not one but two HDMI 2.1 ports as well.
Starting July 17th, the MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50 will be sold for $899. If you’re seeking an almost equally impressive offering from MSI, consider the 2024 model of the MPG 271QR instead. While it maintains the same screen size, certain features have been slightly scaled back. It still offers two HDMI 2.1 ports, but the DisplayPort is only version 1.4. The OLED Care is an updated version, MSI’s OLED Care 2.0, and the refresh rate is 360Hz instead of 500Hz. It holds a less impressive DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification and lacks ClearMR certification entirely. However, this compromise in features comes with a more affordable price tag, as it will retail for $799.
ACER PD243Y E – Dual Display for Techy Travelers
Working with multiple large displays, typically 27 inches or more, might make your ultra-portable laptop feel almost useless during a business trip as it may limit productivity significantly. The Acer PD243Y E offers a solution to this issue with its portable dual display design, featuring two IPS screens linked by a hinge along the device’s length.
As a gamer, I’m all about versatility, and this device delivers! The hinge on it folds an impressive 315 degrees, giving me the freedom to adjust the screen’s position vertically or horizontally, and even at angles that suit my gaming needs best. It’s like having a customizable gaming setup, all rolled into one portable device.
It’s no surprise that compact monitors may not measure up to their larger counterparts. These displays offer a decent 100Hz refresh rate with a resolution of 1920×1080 on each screen. The panel supports approximately 16.7 million colors and covers about 72% of the NTSC color gamut, which is nearly 100% of the sRGB gamut. In other words, the PD243Y is suitable for office tasks, though it might not be your first choice when color accuracy matters. For portable gaming, it’s a reasonable option, but not ideal for applications where color precision is crucial.
This device comes equipped with two USB Type-C ports and an HDMI 1.4 port, in addition to integrated 2-watt speakers. Interestingly, it’s compatible with VESA wall mounting, which seems unusual given that the design emphasizes portability.
According to Acer, this display model will be accessible in July, priced at 499€ online. At present, there’s no dollar equivalent given, leading us to speculate that it might not be released in the U.S., or perhaps Acer is uncertain about the pricing adjustments needed as the year progresses. If you’re seeking a more portable alternative, take a look at Acer’s PD293Q. It offers slightly smaller screens (18.5 inches each). This model also includes two USB Type-C ports, but it has an HDMI Mini port instead of standard HDMI. The alternative costs $349.
Gigabyte M27QS Smart Gaming Monitor – Game and Watch
As a tech enthusiast, I can’t help but be drawn to versatile devices that offer more than just one function. That’s why I find the idea of a monitor that doubles as a gaming powerhouse, like the new Gigabyte M27QS, incredibly appealing. Gigabyte refers to it as their “Smart Gaming Monitor,” and for good reason!
Regarding its monitor specifications, this model is quite standard – boasting a 1440p resolution and a refresh rate of 180Hz on an IPS display. However, what sets the M27QS apart is its impressive software features. This monitor can function both as a computer screen and a television, thanks to the built-in Google TV. To enhance user experience, Gigabyte has also included a remote control with the display. Moreover, the inclusion of two five-watt speakers means you may not need additional speakers for your basic audio needs.
The Gigabyte M27QS Smart Monitor is anticipated to be released for sale between July and August at an affordable price of $249. This puts it at a budget-friendly cost compared to other comparable models in the market. However, if you can’t wait that long, the earlier model, Gigabyte M27Q, is currently available on Amazon for $280. It offers a 1440p resolution, 180Hz refresh rate, and AMD FreeSync support. Although it does not include Google TV support, which the upcoming M27QS will have, and is slightly more expensive, it remains a reliable option if you’re seeking a monitor with similar specifications.
