Well, hello, Islanders!
One year ago, and following a lengthy 41-minute postponement, we’ve at last welcomed a fresh group of charming singles onto the seventh season of Love Island USA. Although the world has undergone significant changes since this same time last summer, the enchanting atmosphere of the Love Island villa remains everlasting. (Notably, they’ve incorporated a new area we refer to as a “speakeasy.”)
So was the premiere episode worth the wait?
Following a 40-minute wait and a four-minute introduction segment where each contestant lip-synced to Janelle Monáe’s “Make Me Feel,” some might find the method rather irritating. However, once the annoyance subsides, it becomes clear that this year’s group appears quite promising. We have all our usual Love Island stereotypes, along with a single mom, an openly queer woman (Happy Pride!), and a man who always wears his cowboy hat. Rumor has it, two of the Islanders are Trump supporters, but let’s face it, so are half of the Real Housewives. What exactly should we anticipate here?
Just like on Love Island, the women are dressed in neon Lycra mini-dresses, while the men don colorful blazers over unbuttoned shirts. I haven’t picked my favorites yet, but everything about Austin – from his frosted hair to his smooth-talking moves – sends chills down my spine.
The idea behind Love Island isn’t far from a more mature version of a middle school dance where couples switch partners, and each challenge can be seen as a modern take on “spin the bottle.” So, this year’s unique element in the pairing process might not seem as surprising as it could. The rules, as laid out by host Ariana Madix (looking particularly stunning), go like this: Each girl selects two boys to share a kiss with, then makes her choice for a partner based on those encounters.
In a somewhat unexpected turn of events, Chelley, a 27-year-old day trader from Queens, finds herself kissing Austin, and later, Ace – an alluring man with a captivating five-to-ten inch dimple. It turns out that Ace is someone Chelley had previously encountered outside a New York City club. Given this coincidental meeting, many believe destiny has brought them together in Fiji. Consequently, Chelley forms a relationship with Ace.
In a turn of events, it’s Huda, a 24-year-old single mom and a newfound beacon in my life, who is to make a decision. Ariana advises her that although Ace has been claimed, she can still try for him if she wishes. However, Huda opts for Jeremiah instead. With a firm grip on Huda’s hand, Jeremiah declares he had already won over her heart. Whether Jeremiah truly is as sweet as he seems or simply knows the rules of this game well, his dedication to this brief relationship is unwavering. He skillfully avoids Yulissa’s attempts at a kiss later on. Jeremiah admits that he shouldn’t invest all his hopes in one person, but as he puts it later, “She’s my preferred option.
Moving forward, what makes Belle-A stand out, apart from the unique spelling of her name, is that she appears clueless about the show she’s participating in. Instead of engaging in full kisses, she opts for cheek pecks. I admire her for setting boundaries, but doesn’t she realize how much simulated intimacy awaits her if she continues on this program? Unfortunately, she ends up with Nic, a character created by witches to annoy me personally. Now, let’s talk about Olandria. Originating from Alabama, she carries all of her charming Southern phrases with her. She yearns for a mature country gentleman capable of constructing a home. The closest match we have is Taylor, a woman deeply immersed in the equine world whose character could be described as “cowgirl.” She also has a peculiar fascination with “unsightly feet.
Yulissa was the last one to pick a partner, and it seems she’s been eagerly anticipating some kind of mischief. People often refer to her as a “sparkler,” and she seems determined to live up to that nickname. She locks lips with Ace, and their exchange continues for some time. When it comes down to choosing, Jeremiah has already ruled himself out, leaving Yulissa to choose Ace. This leaves Chelley paired with Austin, who’s known as a “pool boy” and grumbles about his boss preventing him from flirting with customers. By the end of the day, Jeremiah and Huda are kissing under the covers, while Belle-A has managed to secure a chaste cuddle with Nic, but no one else appears ready for intimacy yet.
Now that the introductions are out of the way, it’s time to begin Love Island proper.
In the morning, the inhabitants of our island are settling into their new daily habits. Nic is the first one to prepare breakfast for his girlfriend, while Olandria and Taylor chat about fishing strategies. Huda, on the other hand, seems reluctant to tell Jeremiah she has a daughter – an admission that could potentially crown them as this season’s parental figures in the villa. However, Huda wants to ensure that a man is genuinely interested in her before revealing her single-mother status. I can understand her reasoning, but I believe it’s crucial to disclose such important information early on in a relationship – ideally, by the second date. I fear this situation could lead to complications.
In the meantime, Chelley and Ace put on a brave front, insisting to us and themselves that they’re not secretly pining for each other instead of their actual partners, Austin and Yulissa. However, it’s clear that no one is convinced by this act. The only exception might be Austin, who appears genuinely delighted with the situation. Savor it, Austin, because as things stand, Chelley has merely stated that she hasn’t developed any dislike for you yet.
At dusk on the Islander’s inaugural day at the villa, Ariana struts into the courtyard with a revelation to share. It seems there’s another twist, and unluckily for Bella-A, it involves yet another kissing challenge. In this game, all Islanders are blindfolded and given permission to kiss whoever they fancy without revealing their choice (not even to the recipient). The only unexpected participant in this round is Olandria. I had assumed she was happily settled with her fixated cowboy, but it appears she also has romantic feelings for Ace, making her the sixth girl he’s kissed in the villa – Bella-A being the exception as she hasn’t shared a kiss with anyone yet.
Regarding Ace: During his chance, he affectionately greets Chelley, as expected, however, an unexpected twist unfolds when he also plants a kiss on Huda. Why are you trying to create tension in a marriage? I thought the idea of the “invisible bond” between you two was strong. However, let’s continue because it’s time for a shocking revelation. Enter Charlie, a British gentleman, and Cierra, known for her intelligence, charm, and physical attractiveness. They seem to show affection generously, ensuring no one feels excluded if they don’t receive a kiss.
In the final moment, Ariana guides the islanders to once again cover their eyes and signal if they’re interested in learning more about the newcomers through their kisses. I’d wager a million dollars that Ace, with his charming yet disloyal demeanor, will be the one raising his hand.
Can I Pull You for a Chat?
• God, the veneers on these babies.
It seems somewhat inconsiderate of Taylor to hold such stringent expectations towards toes, given that he has an imperfect one himself, as he points out to Olandria.
• “You still have breast milk on your breath” — Olandria, who is a queen, to Ace, who is 22.
Belle-A might want to walk with confidence!” – A gentle reminder for Belle-A to work on her pronunciation style, which could use some attention in the near future.
So far, there’s been plenty of discussion emphasizing the importance of sisterhood. Let’s hope these girls can maintain that bond and not allow Ace’s dance moves to disrupt it.
Was it Belle-A who mentioned that she’s never slept in the same bed with a man, and is this the point at which she intends to begin her journey?
