In my perspective as a fan, Marty McFly assumes the moniker Clint Eastwood when he journeys back to 1885 in “Back to the Future Part III.” Yet, the trilogy’s finale subtly pays homage to the iconic cowboy film legend even more. Following the entertaining yet fleeting adventure of the second sequel, “Back to the Future Part II,” the trilogy concluded on a high note with “Back to the Future Part III.” In this final chapter, Marty and Doc Brown travel to the late 19th century to rectify a historical mistake, and overall, the third film simplified the narrative after the complex middle installment.
One recurring joke in the movie is that Marty adopts the alias Clint Eastwood to fit in with the townsfolk, and later, Hilly Valley’s future renames Clayton Ravine as Eastwood Ravage. By the end of Back to the Future Part III, Marty returns to his own time and manages to correct the timeline. Although the name Clint Eastwood serves as an Easter egg, this third part of the series also subtly acknowledges the actor/director by delving into his extensive filmography.
Back To The Future’s Revenge Of The Creature Poster Nods To Clint Eastwood’s First Movie
Eastwood First Appeared In The Universal Monsters Sequel
Initially in “Back to the Future Part III,” Marty and Doc find themselves at a drive-in theater in 1955. Their mission is to send Marty back in time, so he can prevent Doc from being killed in 1885. While trying on a flashy cowboy outfit to fit in with the past, Marty jokes that Clint Eastwood never wore such absurd costumes. Interestingly, a poster for “Revenge of the Creature,” which was actually Clint Eastwood’s debut film, can be seen in the background of this scene.
Instead of instantly becoming famous like many other actors, Eastwood spent several years working in bit parts and unrecognized roles. In the movie “Revenge of the Creature,” Eastwood portrayed a lab technician with a humorous scene involving missing mice. Although his role was minor, it displayed a hint of the chemistry that would later become a hallmark of his career. Back to the Future Part III makes a subtle joke by depicting 1955 Doc being unaware of who Eastwood is at that time.
Clint Eastwood’s brief role in ‘Revenge of the Creature’ might be a minor chapter in his illustrious career, yet it underscores the dramatic evolution of Hollywood. It is hard to believe that such a renowned figure would have started so modestly, but this was the norm under the studio system of 1955. Eastwood didn’t achieve stardom until almost a decade later, with his performance in ‘A Fistful of Dollars’, which cemented his status as a household name that endures even today. Remarkably, Clint Eastwood’s career has extended across three significant time periods depicted in the Back to the Future series (1955, 1985, and 2015).
The Same Back To The Future Scene References Another Early Eastwood Role
Clint Eastwood Had A Busy First Year In Hollywood
During the identical scene in Back to the Future Part III, where the poster for Revenge of the Creature is displayed, a sneak peek at another early Clint Eastwood movie is subtly hinted at as well. Located close to the bathrooms, just next to the mentioned movie poster, there’s also a glimpse of the science fiction horror film Tarantula. This 1955 giant spider movie is frequently recognized as a ’50s B-movie classic, and it showcases one of Clint Eastwood’s other early roles, albeit uncredited. In this film, Clint Eastwood plays an unnamed Jet Squadron leader who soars over the desert.
In the spirit of my review for “Revenge of the Creature”, let me tell you that just like how the creature was given little to showcase its abilities, Clint Eastwood, in the film “Tarantula”, isn’t offered much scope to demonstrate his acting prowess. However, he manages to convincingly embody the rugged fighter pilot character that he plays. Interestingly, 1955 saw four films released by Universal, with young Clint Eastwood gracing their screens. Only one of these films actually acknowledged him, and in it, I portrayed Jonesy in “Francis in the Navy”, which was the sixth installment of the beloved Francis the Talking Mule series. Post 1955, I continued to take on roles without credit until I eventually earned named parts.
Clint Eastwood’s 1955 filmography includes:
Movie | Role | Note |
---|---|---|
Revenge of the Creature | Lab Technician Jennings | Uncredited |
Francis in the Navy | Jonesy | First Credited Role |
Lady Godiva in Coventry | First Saxon | Uncredited |
Tarantula | Jet Sqaudron Leader | Uncredited |
Although the anecdote about Eastwood’s early career and the simultaneous release of “Revenge of the Creature” and “Tarantula” is intriguing, it might not be entirely historically correct. While both movies were indeed produced by Universal in 1955, they weren’t actually shown together as a double bill. Instead, “Revenge of the Creature” was screened with “Cult of the Cobra,” and “Tarantula” was often paired with “Running Wild.” Given the distribution rules during that time and currently, it seems implausible that the drive-in theater in “Back to the Future Part III” would have shown these two films at the same time.
