A fresh perspective on why Madame Web‘s box office performance fell short has emerged from the movie’s lead actor. The Sony/Marvel Spider-Man Universe has concluded following the underwhelming box office performance of Kraven the Hunter, which signaled the end for this franchise, with films like Morbius and Madame Web also struggling at the ticket office previously. Despite a star-studded cast featuring Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Adam Scott, Madame Web failed to attract audiences globally, ultimately earning just $100.5 million worldwide. Over a year later, the film’s lead actor has finally shared their thoughts on the matter.
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve always been eager to share my thoughts on the films I’m involved with. Recently, I sat down with the Los Angeles Times to discuss the challenges we faced with Madame Web and the reception it received.
Being the lead actress in the film, I’ve unfortunately found myself at the center of many criticisms about the movie falling short of expectations. However, I want to make it clear that it wasn’t my fault. The truth is, a lot of creative decisions are made by committee, and sometimes, these decisions can veer the project off course.
In the case of Madame Web, our initial vision for the story shifted dramatically during development, which ultimately impacted its quality. I believe if we had been able to stick to the original plan, the film could have been more satisfying for audiences.
The responsibility wasn’t mine. Nowadays, many creative choices are made collectively or by individuals lacking creativity. It’s quite challenging to produce art or something enjoyable under such circumstances. I believe ‘Madame Web’ initially had a different vision but evolved into something else, and I merely accompanied the transformation process. Such occurrences are common, even in big-budget films, as they sometimes fail despite best efforts.
I’m not covering it with a Band-Aid, and there’s nothing in me saying, “I’ll never do that again” about anything. I’ve even been part of small films that didn’t succeed. So what?
