Stranger Things Season 5: 3-Year Wait, Frustrating Release & Hidden Problems

I’m thrilled to share that Netflix has finally announced the release date for Season 5 of Stranger Things, but it’s the schedule for the final season that’s causing a bit of unease among fans like me. This gripping series, masterfully created by the Duffer Brothers, took the world by storm when it first premiered in 2016. Set in the ’80s, Stranger Things paints a chilling picture of an evil alternate dimension, the Upside Down, and juxtaposes it against the seemingly ordinary town of Hawkins, Indiana. As the Upside Down begins to encroach upon Hawkins and its residents, the central characters of Stranger Things are tasked with finding a way to seal the portal between these two dimensions.

The hit series Stranger Things quickly gained fame due to its unique storyline, talented cast, clever dialogue, and authentic portrayal of ’80s life. As the show has evolved over time, however, the 80’s atmosphere has somewhat faded amidst the fast-paced action of its intense plot. While Stranger Things enjoys a strong reputation with relatively little criticism across its four seasons, Season 5 is already facing two potential issues even before its return to Netflix, which is several months away.

Stranger Things Season 5 Has a Three-Part Release

The Fifth Season Took Almost Four Years to Make

Before the rise of streaming services as a primary source of entertainment, weekly television shows would air new episodes on a specific day of the week. Nowadays, some streaming platforms stick to the traditional method of releasing one episode per week, while others opt for “binge-worthy” releases where all episodes become available at once. However, the release schedule for Stranger Things Season 5 will not follow the latter pattern; instead, its airing is irregular.

Beginning on November 26, Netflix revealed that the series will be divided into three parts, with additional episodes releasing on December 25. The final installment of the series will become available for streaming on December 31.

For a series that will leave fans waiting since November 2025, the fragmented rollout strategy of Season 5 seems unnecessary and confusing. It seems Netflix is aiming to create more hype and maximize viewership by not following a standard release pattern. By not committing to a regular schedule, Netflix is taking chances with the audience’s response to the final season. Fans might forget to watch or lose interest because they have to wait even longer for closure.

The issue at hand also pertains to the prolonged filming timeline of the series. For instance, Seasons 4 and 5 were filmed around four years apart, yet the time gap portrayed on screen is only about 16 months. Looking back, when the young actors made their debut in Season 1, they ranged from 12 to 15 years old. Fast forward to 2025, and these same cast members are now in their early twenties, giving the impression that a significant amount of time has elapsed since Barb’s disappearance at the swimming pool. In essence, the actors have physically outgrown the characters they initially portrayed, necessitating either aging makeup or a larger time jump to maintain continuity in the storyline. To address this inconsistency more effectively, Stranger Things could have chosen to introduce a broader time leap instead.

Season 4 Was Split Into Two Volumes

The Fourth Season was Delayed Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic

The duration between Seasons 4 and 5 of Stranger Things seems prolonged (and indeed it does), but you might be surprised to know that Seasons 3 and 4 had a three-year interval as well. The third season was all released on the 4th of July in 2019, whereas Season 4 was divided into two parts: the first seven episodes came out on May 27, 2022, while the remaining two, known as Volume Two, were released a month later, on July 1, 2022. The Duffer Brothers explained in an official Netflix announcement that these last episodes were separated because of their shorter runtime. As more details unfolded and the storylines became richer, each episode grew to be the length of a small movie; it’s anticipated that the final season will maintain similar episode lengths.

Initially, the first three seasons were finished as scheduled. However, production for Seasons 4 and 5 faced unexpected delays. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced a global lockdown in early 2020, filming for Season 4 was underway in Lithuania. Filming resumed in September 2020 and concluded a year later.

In February 2022, the Duffer Brothers revealed that Stranger Things Season 5 was in the works, along with plans for a spin-off series. They started writing the final season in August 2022, but production halted due to the Writers Guild of America strike in 2023 and resumed in September 2023. Filming began in January 2024, with delays caused by the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). After nearly a year of filming, production wrapped up in December 2024.

Stranger Things Season 5 Drops Over Three Holidays

The Finale Will Be Released on New Year’s Eve

In an unusual move, Netflix has decided to distribute the final season of Stranger Things across three significant American holidays: Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), Christmas Day (Dec. 25), and New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31). Each installment is planned to drop at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET, with a new wave of episodes appearing on each holiday. While the show has previously released episodes over holidays, this is the first time a three-part holiday release schedule is being implemented. Simultaneously, Netflix revealed the titles for all upcoming episodes, omitting one title that is bound to spark fan theories until nearly six months later: Stranger Things Season 5, Episode 2, “The Disappearance of…

Releasing episodes during the 2025 holiday season is a strategic choice, yet it raises some concerns. With high production costs and numerous salaries to account for, it’s clear that Netflix aims to leverage the holidays to enhance the show’s popularity. Families usually come together over the holidays and often find themselves watching TV or going to the movies. Even those who don’t celebrate a holiday or choose not to participate tend to spend their time watching something instead. However, the release pattern for Season 5 could potentially lead it to be overlooked in some way. The inconsistency in release dates and the number of episodes being dropped might make it harder for the season to stand out amidst the crowd.

Furthermore, it’s important to note that this upcoming release on Nov 21, 2025, will face stiff competition from various other shows and movies this holiday season. Instead of boosting viewership, this intense competition could potentially have a negative impact. Among the films set for release on Christmas Day in December 2025 are “Anaconda,” “Marty Supreme,” “Song Sung Blue,” and “The Housemaid.” In addition to these, the third installment of the “Knives Out” anthology, titled “Wake Up Dead Man,” will be available on Netflix on Dec 12. The highly anticipated fifth season of “Stranger Things” is also going up against a lot of competition within the film industry itself.

Stranger Things Season 5 Has High Expectations

The Series’ Legacy Is Resting on Its Shoulders

In 2016, the popular Netflix series “Stranger Things” caused quite a stir online, further cementing Netflix’s position as a leading streaming service. Over time, various elements have played a significant role in cultivating its large fanbase and maintaining high viewer interest. Despite occasional inconsistencies, “Stranger Things” stands out as one of the most inventive and unique television productions available. Since its debut nearly a decade ago, this show has left an indelible impression on the entertainment world with a gripping plot, well-developed characters, convincing CGI, and a powerful nod to the 1980s.

It’s not surprising that the show has received more than 250 award nominations given its compelling plotlines, excellent music selections, and the shocking elimination of a beloved character in each season.

Or:

Given its mix of captivating storylines, impressive music choices, and the occasional surprise elimination of a fan-favorite character, it’s no wonder that the show has been recognized with over 250 award nominations.

There’s little question that “Stranger Things” Season 5 is poised for even more nominations and media buzz, but the three-year wait has built enough tension on its own. The showrunners, the Duffer Brothers, and Netflix are under pressure to deliver a satisfying conclusion. What makes this anticipation even greater is that the fourth season ended with such a dramatic cliffhanger, and Season 5 promises to conclude the struggle between Hawkins and the Upside Down. Fans of the series can hardly wait!
