Phantom Liberty might not mark the end of expansions for Cyberpunk 2077, and it’s possible that the team behind remasters/remakes like Oblivion and the forthcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 could be working on the next DLC.
Despite Cyberpunk 2077 regaining player trust following its rocky debut, the game developers have yet to fulfill all their initial promises. To date, they haven’t released an official multiplayer mode for the game.
Following the last major update, it appeared that players could only anticipate the game’s release on a new hardware platform. This is why Free_Carpenter151 – a Reddit user – was taken aback when, while scrolling through LinkedIn, he encountered the profile of an employee from Virtuos studio who has been developing quests for Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC since April.
Cyberpunk 2077 is still alive in 2025
It turns out that this internet user was taken aback by this discovery. Interestingly enough, it appears that the CD Projekt Red team may have dabbled in this universe before. Despite claims of wrapping up the game’s development with version 2.1, they subsequently released another significant update, which they had been working on in secret. While fixing issues and adding a few quests is one matter, creating a story DLC is a whole different league – and it seems Doug Van Horne is currently engaged in that endeavor.
A screenwriter based in Seattle was all set to commence work at Virtuos studio in April 2025, where his role would be to develop numerous new side missions for the game Cyberpunk 2077. To add more excitement, Van Horne hinted that he would refine quests for the upcoming multiple DLC releases.
Old info with a new date?
It was noted earlier that the players were taken aback by this revelation. Some Reddit users speculated about a different interpretation for this data, such as the possibility that Van Horne might have recently updated his profile, making the reference to “Cyberpunk 2077” DLC possibly referring to “Phantom Liberty“.
The issue lies in the fact that, despite CD Projekt Red collaborating with Virtuos Studio, it seems they worked together solely on the 2.2 update for Cyberpunk 2077, which was scheduled at the end of 2024 (based on the information we have from official sources).
Absolutely, it’s plausible to say that Van Horne referred to this major update as “DLC”. Essentially, the 2.2 version introduced some fresh content, making it comparable to additional content you might purchase or download, hence the term ‘DLC’.
Apart from his secretiveness, it’s clear that Van Horne harbors a strong interest in the realm of Cyberpunk 2077. On his personal website, he has showcased not one but two writing samples set within this universe. These pieces were published prior to the 2.2 update, with one being unveiled as early as November 21, 2024 – a full two weeks before the rollout of the most recent Cyberpunk 2077 update.
Second, smaller DLC before Cyberpunk 2?
The theory hinges on the possibility that Van Horne or LinkedIn made an error, and the writer collaborated with Virtuos Studio not during the period from April to now, but prior to the release of the last significant update of Cyberpunk 2077. Neither the official American site nor any announcement or updated roster of game developers verifies this claim.
It’s noteworthy that there have been whispers suggesting that Virtuos employees might have played a part in developing the second DLC for CD Projekt Red, which was rumored to explore lunar landscapes but ended up being canceled.
As per a user on a Polish developer’s official forum, it seems unusual for CDPR (Cyberpunk 2077 developers) to collaborate with a new studio for just one update. It’s hard to fathom why they would share their game’s source code with an external team for merely a few new features and enhancements. However, if this partnership is aimed at taking things to the next level…
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Virtuos has set up a subsidiary in Warsaw (opened in May 2023 according to GamesIndustry.biz), managed by Peter Sikacheve who previously worked at People Can Fly and CD Projekt until May 2019. This move undeniably strengthens ties with Polish game developers, particularly studios like CD Projekt Red that are now concentrating on their upcoming projects.
To reiterate, it’s important to note that the development of Cyberpunk 2077 is finalized, which suggests that any significant updates or DLCs are unlikely, even if they were on a smaller scale like Phantom Liberty, as some online users have speculated.
Despite this, fans might not voice any objections if CD Projekt Red was quietly working on something new for them. After all, who knows, it could possibly be a surprise present coinciding with the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 on the Nintendo Switch 2 console on Thursday, June 5th?
