Giuseppe Tornatore Doc on Italy’s ‘King of Cashmere’ Brunello Cucinelli Revealed Ahead of American Academy in Rome Honor

Renowned Oscar-winning filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore (“Cinema Paradiso”) is perfecting the final details on an esteemed documentary featuring Brunello Cucinelli, often referred to as Italy’s “King of Cashmere,” who is a well-known fashion designer.

01 Distribution, an affiliate of RAI Cinema, has revealed that Tornatore’s low-profile documentary about Cucinelli’s journey from a farmer’s son to the CEO of a billionaire-valued global luxury lifestyle brand will be screened in Italian movie theaters on December 9. This distribution is being handled by 01 Distribution.

The specifics of the Cucinelli production are being tightly guarded, except for its title in Italian, which is “Brunello, il visionario garbato” or “Brunello, the Polite Visionary,” and the knowledge that the film’s music is being composed by the esteemed, Oscar-winning Italian musician Nicola Piovani, best known for his work on “Life Is Beautiful.

The doc is being produced by Rome’s MasiFilm and RAI Cinema. World sales are still being decided.

As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about a documentary that delves into the captivating life story of Mr. Cucinelli, a visionary born in the enchanting Umbrian hamlet of Castel Rigone in 1953. This film promises to take us on a journey through his professional journey, which began when he established his company in 1978 and revolutionized the fashion industry with his innovative approach to dyeing cashmere in vibrant hues – a bold move at a time when there were no color options for women.

The documentary, shot right here in Umbria, will offer a glimpse into pivotal moments of his career, showcasing his unwavering dedication to Italian craftsmanship and his unique philosophy known as “humanistic capitalism.” This philosophy is rooted in the belief that every piece of clothing created by his company is made right here in Italy, with a significant emphasis on the region where he was born. This approach not only celebrates our rich cultural heritage but also underscores his commitment to sustainable and socially responsible practices in business. I can’t wait to watch this inspiring tale unfold!

Information emerges that Tornatore’s film Cucinelli will be released soon, which is particularly timely as esteemed director Tornatore, known for his latest critically acclaimed and internationally successful documentary “Ennio” about Ennio Morricone, is due to receive the McKim Medal from the American Academy in Rome on Wednesday. This award recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to cultural exchange between Italy and the United States.

Tornatore will receive his honor at an upcoming gala set within the historic Villa Aurelia from the 17th century. This accolade is specifically named after Charles Follen McKim, a renowned U.S. architect and co-founder of the prestigious American Academy in Rome.

Notable winners of the American Academy in Rome awards have been Paolo Sorrentino, Luca Guadagnino, Roberto Benigni, Franco Zeffirelli, Bernardo Bertolucci, Ennio Morricone, architect Renzo Piano, artist Cy Twombly, artists Luigi Ontani and Miuccia Prada (an Italian designer).
