‘The Shadow Scholars,’ Executive Produced by Steve McQueen, Debuts Trailer Ahead of North American Premiere at Tribeca (EXCLUSIVE)

International trailer debut for “The Shadow Scholars” by Eloise King, distributed, sold and produced by Dogwoof, is now available. The film will have its North American debut on Thursday at the Tribeca Festival’s Spotlight section.

The movie has been jointly produced by Steve McQueen‘s Lammas Park and White Teeth Films, with executive production from Film4 (UK), Dogwoof, and the BFI Doc Society.

As a cinephile captivated by thought-provoking films, I find myself intrigued by “The Shadow Scholars,” a gripping tale that follows Dr. Patricia Kingori, an extraordinary figure as she delves into the clandestine, international, and financially substantial “fake essay” industry. Her journey uncovers a surprising truth about Kenya’s vibrant youth: some 40,000 highly educated yet underemployed individuals who supplement their living by crafting scholarly papers for students worldwide—a group I now refer to as the young “shadow scholars.

With increasing demand comes a rise in stressful situations, such as potential crackdowns seen in the U.K. and Australia, along with the escalating concern over AI technology. This has led Kingori to ponder: if the world’s affluent can buy degrees they haven’t earned, while many educated Kenyans struggle to find work outside this hidden sector, what is the genuine worth of education?

This film is a collaborative effort led by King as director, writer, and producer, alongside Anna Smith Tenser for Lammas Park, Bona Orakwue, and Tabs Breese. McQueen and Kingori are the executive producers, with additional executive production credits going to Ben Coren, Sacha Mirzoeff, and Ollie Madden from Film4, Anna Godas and Oli Harbottle from Dogwoof, and Shanida Scotland and Hannah Bush Bailey for BFI/ Doc Society.
