Through our lives, we encounter widely shared notions about what is considered attractive or admirable when it comes to appearance. However, underneath these general ideas, each person has their unique preferences regarding looks and what they find appealing. For instance, the acclaimed actor Will Smith, a public figure for over 30 years and an Oscar winner, has frequently been included on many people’s lists of attractive men. One possible explanation for this is his distinctive choice in facial hair, but his preferred mustache/goatee combination faced criticism recently. Despite this, the star of the Bad Boys franchise has playfully responded to his critic, and I must admit, I find myself drawn to it more than ever!
What Happened When Will Smith Saw Someone Diss The Look Of A Mustache And Goatee?
Over an extended period on Earth, it’s evident that patterns repeat themselves – this applies not only to broader societal trends but also to more specific areas like fashion and grooming. For instance, the way men style their facial hair tends to follow cycles. While it might be most noticeable in hairstyles, it’s still relevant when considering facial hair trends. Take Will Smith for example; he was clean-shaven in the late ’90s, then sported a mustache, but his signature look is actually the combination of a mustache and goatee.
The rumored lead actor for the upcoming movie “Bad Boys 5” recently browsed through social media platforms and came across a confident statement made by one user:
Black men w the goatee and mustache combo are ugly as fuck
I have sooooo many thoughts and questions about this opinion, but Smith made his own known by simply taking to Instagram, sharing a screenshot of the person’s strongly-worded message and then (after noting in his caption that he was “Just gonna leave this here for you”) kindly offered himself as a subject for the defense of the supposedly dreaded “goatee and mustache combo.”
Even though just two pictures of him without a beard but sporting a mustache and t-shirt were found, I can still delve into my memory bank and provide you with some proof to back his claim. Here is an image from the red carpet premiere of the first “Men In Black” movie in 1997: Observe now, the lead actor of the film.

It’s hard to comprehend. How can someone gaze upon Smith in this photo (taken during his rise to full-fledged movie stardom, where he’s seen holding his eldest son, Trey), and genuinely assert that the man depicted is “extremely unattractive”?
I find myself puzzled about the intentions of the person who made such a broad comment. Are they attracted solely to certain facial hairstyles on men, like mustaches or goatees, and nothing else? Does a Black man specifically need a full beard to garner positive attention from them, or should they always be clean-shaven? And why does this preference seem to only apply to men of African descent? It’s all quite confusing to me.
Despite the fact that the acclaimed actor, known for his outstanding performances in numerous films, defended himself as the reason behind his criticism, it’s not an unfounded opinion. Simply observe him at the 2005 American Music Awards (33rd edition): a single glance will tell you something.

Look at this! He’s even tilted his hat at an angle, and he carries it off quite well. Now, as someone who appreciates hats, I can assure you that they aren’t easy to wear for everyone (some might say the less fashionable members of society). It may be that some people believe a mustache and t-shirt style doesn’t suit Black men, but I hope they’re starting to question their views on it.
