Slain Actor Jonathan Joss Leaves Behind Video Game Voice-Acting Legacy

This week, actor Jonathan Joss, renowned for lending his voice to various popular video games, tragically lost his life in an attack outside his home, which his husband claims was motivated by hate due to their sexual orientation. At 59 years old, he departs with a rich legacy that spans across television shows, films, and games.

Originating from both Comanche and White Mountain Apache lineage, Joss lent his voice to numerous games throughout his professional journey. As per his IMDb profile, Joss appeared in Red Dead Redemption, The Walking Dead: Michonne, Days Gone, and Wasteland 3. In addition, he gave life to the character Robert Rainwater, a ripperdoc, in Cyberpunk 2077 through his voice acting.

Beyond his work in games, he was widely recognized for portraying indigenous characters in humorous TV shows. From 1997 to 2007, he starred as John Redcorn on King of the Hill; subsequently, he made appearances in multiple episodes of Parks and Recreation, where he played Ken Hotate, a casino mogul and tribal leader.

Warning: sensitive and potentially disturbing details about Joss’s death are discussed below.

On June 1, 2025, tragically, Joss was fatally shot at his residence in San Antonio, TX. This unfortunate incident occurred shortly after he had wed his husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, on Valentine’s Day this year. Following the death of Joss, de Gonzales maintained that Joss was targeted in a hate crime by a neighbor who used derogatory anti-gay language towards them. The neighbor in question reportedly disturbed the peace when they visited the couple’s home, which had previously been destroyed by fire. Upon returning to check their mail, the couple found remains of one of their dogs placed conspicuously. Overwhelmed with grief and despair, the couple was confronted by this same neighbor who resorted to gunfire, as de Gonzales explained.

Gonzales disclosed that the couple had experienced persistent homophobic harassment from their community over a long duration, yet their complaints to law enforcement remained unaddressed. However, the San Antonio police department stated they haven’t discovered sufficient evidence to press charges for a hate crime against the suspect. Furthermore, neighbors have mentioned an ongoing dispute between Joss and the suspect that had been unresolved for years.

Numerous performers who had collaborated with Joss previously have openly expressed their grief over his demise. Nick Offerman, famously known for portraying Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation, shared with People Magazine that the cast members from the sitcom held numerous conversations and stood by each other in the wake of the unfortunate incidents.
