Lilo & Stitch: The Cobra Bubbles Change You Missed!

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake!

In the 2025 live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, Cobra Bubbles, a character I deeply admire, undergoes significant transformations, and his narrative connection to the Grand Councilwoman has been entirely reimagined. Despite the remake generally maintaining the original 2002 animated film’s tone, it introduces numerous story changes. Characters like Nani and Jumba have been dramatically altered, while characters such as Captain Gantu have been omitted from the narrative altogether. Cobra Bubbles is one of the characters who has experienced significant modifications; however, these alterations in the Lilo & Stitch remake might not be for the better.

2025’s live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” has sparked intense debate among fans of the series. Some viewers have praised the live-action version, appreciating it as a refreshing update that emphasizes the bond between Nani and Lilo more strongly. Conversely, others have criticized the remake, highlighting issues with alterations to Nani and Jumba’s characters and finding the new ending disregardful of the original film’s spirit. One particular change involving Cobra Bubbles has slipped under the radar for many viewers.

Cobra Bubbles Didn’t Save Earth From An Alien Invasion Before Lilo & Stitch In The Remake

He Is Far Less Aware Of Aliens In The Remake

In the original Lilo & Stitch, Cobra Bubbles is a character shrouded in mystery. His true identity remains unclear throughout the movie until its climax. When the Grand Councilwoman visits Earth, she recognizes Cobra Bubbles, and he returns the recognition. In an unexpected revelation, it’s disclosed that Bubbles was previously a CIA agent, playing a role in the 1973 Roswell event. It transpires that the Galactic United Federation had intended to invade Earth at this time. However, Bubbles managed to persuade them by arguing that the mosquito was an endangered species, thereby securing Earth’s protection from extraterrestrial invasion.

In a shift from the original, Cobra Bubbles in the live-action Disney remake is portrayed not as a former CIA agent turned social worker, but rather an undercover CIA agent, masquerading as a social worker. This new version of Bubbles appears to be unacquainted with the Grand Councilwoman upon her arrival on Earth, and seems taken aback by Stitch’s alien origins throughout the film, implying that he may have missed out on the Roswell incident. Additionally, Cobra Bubbles shows no involvement in the mosquito endangered species scheme, as he is also left unaware of this plotline.

Lilo & Stitch Gave Cobra’s Alien History Story To Pleakley Instead

He Is Behind Making Earth A Wildlife Preserve

In my opinion, as a film critic, the recent remake of Lilo & Stitch cleverly reimagined Cobra Bubbles’ role by passing his narrative onto Pleakley. When the Grand Councilwoman discovers that Stitch has arrived on Earth, she contemplates annihilating the planet. However, in a surprising turn of events, Pleakley steps forward, asserting that Earth is a vital habitat for the endangered mosquito population. This revelation spares Earth from destruction and leads to the Grand Councilwoman assigning Jumba and Pleakley the mission of retrieving Stitch on our planet.

Lilo & Stitch Removing Cobra Bubbles’ Alien Invasion History Hurts The Character

He Is Far Less Competent In The Remake

In essence, stripping Cobra Bubbles of his alien background in the remake diminishes his character’s intelligence and depth compared to the original film. Originally, Bubbles was portrayed as highly intelligent, often staying several steps ahead due to his past with aliens. However, in the remake, Bubbles appears less intelligent, consistently playing catch-up in his pursuit of Stitch, and seemingly unaware of the larger picture. This change results in a sense of shrinkage within the Lilo & Stitch universe, as the relationship between Bubbles and the Grand Councilwoman is now void of their shared history.

The modifications made in the storyline lead to some inconsistencies. Initially, in the original version, the endangered species of mosquitoes was a fabrication. It’s plausible that Bubbles chose to lie about mosquitoes because they are ubiquitous, making it seem like they could maintain Earth’s survival forever as they wouldn’t become extinct. In contrast, the reasoning behind the United Galactic Federation’s conclusion regarding mosquitoes in the remake appears arbitrary and unexplained.

To elaborate further, it remains unclear as to why Cobra Bubbles agrees to conceal the presence of Stitch and other extraterrestrials. In the original film, we know that Bubbles has a past connection with alien encounters, given his role in the Roswell incident. However, in the remake, there appears to be an abrupt change in his behavior towards Stitch, going from pursuit to surrender, which seems unexplained and negatively impacts the narrative of the 2025 version of “Lilo & Stitch”.
