John Wick star Ian McShane shares “tragic” final memory of Lance Reddick

Before the debut of From the John Wick Universe: Ballerina, Ian McShane, who plays Winston in the series, has shared insights about his screen counterpart in manners, Lance Reddick’s character, Charon.

Winston and Charon make a dynamic action-movie team that we never realized was missing. They’re charismatic, composed, faithful, but can turn deadly when the situation calls for it, demonstrating their invaluable support to Keanu Reeves’ character, Baba Yaga.

In a similar vein, the character of Eve, the lethal assassin portrayed by Ana de Armas in the upcoming film “Ballerina,” also shares this sentiment. Notably, McShane and Reddick will once again step into their roles as the formidable duo from The Continental in this production.

Yet, Charon’s comeback holds a mix of joy and sorrow. Although production ended in February 2023, just a month later, Reddick tragically passed away at the age of 60. For McShane, this meant bidding farewell to his friend and co-star without prior knowledge.

Ian McShane describes final memory with Lance Reddick

During a chat with TopMob, The Winston Star mentioned that a particular moment about Lance was when John Wick 4 was released a few years ago. They were both in Los Angeles at the time, and he expressed, “I’ll catch up with you for the premiere in a couple of weeks.

“I went to London, came back, and never saw him again, which is tragic, but there you are.”

McShane commended Reddick not only as a talented actor but also as a cherished companion, disclosing that together, they had crafted an ingenious, though unofficial, history for the characters Winston and Charon.

Typically, he shared that it was common for us to be together, a situation I found enjoyable since we concocted a shared past – meeting in Africa during the ’70s while I worked for MI6 and he was part of local government. This is what he explained to us.

Over time, they maintained contact with each other… Eventually, as they grew too elderly, they were forced to leave their previous arrangements, after which they secretly joined forces and established a relationship. It’s uncertain who supported them in this endeavor. That’s the intriguing part – it could very well be featured in John Wick 5, you never know!

It’s fortunate that Ballerina provides Charon with a more honorable farewell compared to how he met his end in John Wick 4 at the hands of the Marquis de Gramont, played by Bill Skarsgård.

McShane praised Lance, saying he was “excellent” on set, further commenting, “It was delightful to have him there, and his performance seemed like a fitting conclusion in a sense.

Starting June 6, 2025, catch the Ballerina film in cinemas! Until then, explore all the forthcoming John Wick films, uncover why Baby Yaga might not be deceased, and discover other exciting movies premiering this month.
