Given the controversial image of the dissolved DC Extended Universe and recent financial flops at the box office, Warner Bros. executives are eagerly anticipating that James Gunn’s upcoming reboot will be a grand success when it releases this summer. However, a fresh report indicates that the DC Universe reboot featuring Superman needs to soar from the beginning in order to balance its budget.
As per reports, the upcoming reboot of Superman, produced at a cost of $225 million, aims to generate at least half a billion dollars globally to secure profits for Warner Bros., according to an insider from Warner Bros. Discovery. However, a talent agent in Hollywood asserts that the film needs to earn over $700 million worldwide to be deemed successful within the studio. The strong brand recognition of Superman should help them reach or near the half-billion mark globally, but any additional earnings will depend on how well the audience connects with the title character, according to the agent.
In the hands of director Gunn, the fresh take on the iconic character Superman marks the beginning of a new chapter for the DC Universe (DCU) following a decade-long run of the DCEU. The anticipation for this reboot is intense, given its upcoming debut. The leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery is considering replacing co-CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy with Peter Safran, who shares the CEO role at DC Studios with Gunn, due to their dissatisfaction with the studio’s recent box office performance, including the infamous movie that incurred a significant financial loss. Industry experts believe that the success of Superman will not only shape the course for the DCU but also influence the future structure of Warner Bros. leadership, depending on how well it performs.
Early Signs Point to Superman Being a Hit
Titled “Superman,” the movie centers around David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent, the Last Son of Krypton. The narrative unfolds as Clark grapples with his Kryptonian roots in Smallville, Kansas, and his professional life at the Daily Planet where he interacts with his romantic interest, Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan. The story also brings Superman into contact with various well-known characters such as Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Notable adversaries include Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and Angela Spica/The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría).
First Steps, and a premiere in China has given it an additional box-office advantage.
In the remake of DCU’s Superman, we see notable appearances by Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo portraying Jimmy Olsen, Frank Grillo in the role of Rick Flag Sr., and Sara Sampaio playing Eve Teschmacher. This film might be a quick watch for fans of Superman who have been keeping up with the latest news.
Superman opens in theaters worldwide on Jul. 11.
