The action-adventure game Cyberpunk 2077, set to release on June 5 for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, is expected to be one of its most technically challenging games. However, contrary to expectations, CD Projekt Red’s Vice President of Technology, Charles Tremblay, claims that adapting the game for the new console wasn’t as difficult as initially thought.
In an interview with IGN, Tremblay spoke about transferring the expansive role-playing game that originated in the summer of 2023 following a confidential meeting with Nintendo regarding their latest console. During its early stages, he mentioned that one of the main objectives was to explore if it was feasible to run Cyberpunk 2077 on the Switch 2.
The article points out that a challenge faced in the development of Switch 2 was its fewer computational cores compared to even the previous generation consoles used for Cyberpunk 2077. However, Nintendo’s console makes up for this with more RAM, advanced technologies like Nvidia’s DLSS system, and quicker data transfer speeds thanks to custom cartridges and the adoption of new microSD Express cards. When discussing the limitations of previous generation consoles, Tremblay emphasized that “the biggest issue was the mechanical hard drive, which is something we really want to avoid.
Speaking as a die-hard fan, my initial enthusiasm for Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 was undeniably centered around its portability. However, upon further exploration, I’ve come to appreciate the unique benefits that other consoles offer too. For instance, the experience we get on these platforms is distinctly different due to features like gyros, Joy-Con controls, and mouse support. All in all, I believe the total package is quite impressive and worth exploring for any Cyberpunk enthusiast.
The all-inclusive edition of Cyberpunk 2077, called the Ultimate Edition, was announced as a launch title for Switch 2. This special version includes the Phantom Liberty expansion, which isn’t accessible on older generation systems. Unlike other third-party publishers’ games released on Game-Key Cards, the physical version of Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 will come on a cartridge. The game itself is stored on this cartridge, rather than a download being required through a Game-Key Card as with some other games.
