Every summer from June 16th to August 27th, I’m thrilled to be a part of the captivating teen-focused matinee series, Movie Den, held at the intimate MUBI microcinema. This fantastic event is all about igniting the passion for cinema in young hearts, aiming to engage, delight, and inspire the upcoming generation of film enthusiasts. Some of the screenings you can expect during this series are “Rear Window,” “Good Burger,” “The Half of It,” and the 1988 version of “Hairspray.” I can’t wait to immerse myself in these cinematic gems!
As the mother of teens and part of a community that’s faced numerous challenges this year, it was crucial for me and my team to make an effort to alleviate some of the difficulties during the upcoming summer by broadening our programming. Our aim is to provide opportunities for us to leave the house, put down our devices, and reconnect with each other. I remember how movies served as a refuge for me when I was a teenager, and in these trying times, our youngsters (and their caregivers) need that sanctuary more than ever. We’re excited to invite everyone to our Movie Den.
Screenings at the Movie Den will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays afternoons at 1PM. Each ticket costs $2 and includes free popcorn. Additionally, parallel programming designed for teenagers to broaden their knowledge about Vidiots will be available before and after each screening. The Movie Den is backed by MUBI and the Golden Globe Foundation, who are founding members of Vidiots.
You can find the complete schedule and ticket details for the film series at Vidiots Foundation’s website: https://vidiotsfoundation.org/film-series/movieden/
Gianna Toboni’s ‘Just Head’ Receives Grant From Subject Matter at Tribeca
Gianna Toboni’s movie “Just Kids” will be awarded a $25,000 grant from Subject Matter at the 2025 Tribeca Festival. This recognition is given to her film.
Since its debut in 2022, the subject matter has been offering finances and resources for documentary films focusing on social issues and backing nonprofits involved in the projects they feature. To date, it has granted a total of $484,000 to twelve documentaries addressing various social issues, with “Just Kids” being its most recent addition.
As a movie enthusiast, I’d highly recommend “Just Kids” – a film that delves deep into the contentious topic of nationwide restrictions on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender individuals. The film offers an intimate and poignant portrayal of three families grappling with these bans, shedding light on how this social issue has been manipulated by political agendas, often at the expense of marginalized communities.
What makes this film even more impactful is that Subject Matter, the production company behind it, will be granting $25,000 to the Trans Youth Emergency Project run by the Campaign for Southern Equality – an effort aimed at providing essential support to transgender youth in crisis situations.
The Campaign for Southern Equality offers assistance in terms of logistics, finances, and personal guidance to help find unaffected healthcare providers, as well as emergency funds for travel costs through their Trans Youth Emergency Project. Moreover, they will partner with the Tribeca Film Festival to boost their efforts by raising extra money for the LGBTQ+ group.
At the Tribeca Film Festival screenings of “Just Kids,” Subject Matter plans to be present, encouraging viewers to contribute to the Trans Youth Emergency Project by the Campaign for Southern Equality. This charitable organization will match donations made, up to a total of $5,000.
