Twitch paywalls highly-requested Rewind feature Kick and YouTube offer for free

The much-anticipated “rewind” feature on Twitch, owned by Amazon, is set to launch in summer 2025. However, unlike services like YouTube and Kick, this rewind function will be available only for those who are willing to pay.

For a long time, Twitch users have asked for the capability to swiftly go back in live streams, as they desire to view previous segments of a broadcast without having to switch to a Video On Demand (VOD).

Even though they are relatively newcomers to the live streaming scene, competitors such as Kick and YouTube have been providing this specific feature for quite some time now.

At TwitchCon Europe, Dan Clancy, the CEO, announced that the ‘rewind’ feature will be available on Twitch this summer; however, there’s a significant condition attached.

Twitch makes users pay to use rewind feature

At TwitchCon held in Rotterdam, Clancy shared an insight that many people, including himself, have found themselves desiring a rewind feature on Twitch at least once, as everyone encounters situations where they wish such a feature existed.

Arriving at a stream slightly late or briefly stepping aside might mean missing an exciting moment. However, by this coming summer, users with Turbo and channel subscriptions will have the opportunity to rewind streams, as this new feature will be made available,” he disclosed.

You can go back through the video stream to catch up on what you might have missed. Once you’re all updated, simply click the ‘Live’ button to reconnect to the live broadcast.

On Twitch, Twitch Turbo is priced at $11.99 USD monthly, contrastingly, an independent subscription for a single channel is set at $5.99.

In essence, individuals seeking to utilize the Rewind feature across various channels would benefit more by subscribing to Turbo. Alternatively, they could opt for streaming services like YouTube or Kick, especially when the content creator is simultaneously broadcasting to these platforms as well.

It’s worth mentioning that neither Kick nor YouTube require users to pay for their integrated rewind feature, a fact that has left many viewers discontented by Twitch’s choice.

“Paywalling 15-year-old tech is insane from the Amazon people,” one user blasted.

One individual jokingly commented, ‘If there’s a single company I can depend on to consistently undermine their own success with each innovative move, it’s Twitch.’

As a gamer, I gotta say, this rewind feature we’re playing with now is still in beta testing, so don’t be surprised if it gets tweaked a bit more before it hits every gamer’s hands eventually.

Currently, if someone really wants to go back on a Twitch stream, they’ll have to pay for the privilege. However, it’s important to note that not all new features will be paid; vertical streams are set to roll out this summer without charge.
