Twitch has officially introduced an innovative feature enabling broadcasters to stream content in both portrait (vertical) and landscape (horizontal) modes. This update simplifies the viewing experience for mobile users, who can now easily enjoy live streams on their devices.
Streaming videos vertically became more widely used on applications such as TikTok and Instagram, which are structured with this particular video style at their core.
In February 2024, YouTube introduced vertical live streams as an option for its Shorts feed, allowing content creators on their platform to simultaneously broadcast in both vertical and horizontal formats.
Twitch, much like YouTube, is now offering the option for vertical streaming specifically designed for mobile viewers, making it more convenient than ever to watch live broadcasts on the go.
Twitch reveals vertical streaming
At TwitchCon Europe, it was revealed that this feature will be implemented, and it was further explained in a blog post on the Twitch website. The essence of the announcement is: “We aim to provide viewers with an optimal viewing experience, regardless of the device they’re using to watch your channel.
After enabling the new feature, users viewing from a desktop computer can only access landscape-oriented video streams. In contrast, mobile users can switch between vertical and horizontal landscape views based on how they hold their device – with the phone upright, they’ll see the stream in a vertical orientation, while holding it horizontally will display the stream in a landscape view.
This year, we’re giving mobile a fresh look with dual-format streaming! This means you can stream content comfortably in both horizontal and vertical modes, catering to both desktop enthusiasts and mobile users who prefer scrolling vertically. No more straining your neck to watch sideways!

With the updated vertical design, viewers can effortlessly engage in activities like Hype Trains and back you by subscribing, gifting, and cheering as they enjoy your stream in full-screen mode. Plus, they’ll have the ability to tailor their chat experience for a better control over the amount of chat that appears on their screen.
Regarding accessibility, Twitch plans to initially make the new feature available on a limited number of channels this summer. Over time, they plan to gradually extend it to more users by the end of this year.
In addition to that, they’re also planning to unveil more features over the next few months. One of these is broadening the beta testing for high-definition streaming at 2K resolution, which will be available for Partners and Affiliates.
The company owned by Amazon is planning to introduce a “rewind” function, enabling users to review the recent moments of a live stream.
