The internet has been buzzing with interest after Magnus Carlsen‘s unexpected defeat at the hands of chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju. This viral sensation comes as Carlsen, from Norway, has generated a lot of attention online.
Generally, chess tends to stay within its own niche online. But occasionally, an extraordinary event in this centuries-old game captures the world’s attention on the web. This phenomenon has been boosted by well-known chess masters like Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, who have garnered internet fame.
More frequently, competitions are being broadcast across platforms like Twitch and YouTube, reaching wider audiences than ever before. This includes renowned events such as world championships, the acclaimed PogChamps series on Chess.com, and numerous other events too.
During the Norway Chess 2025 competition, games were also broadcasted on YouTube. Though viewership was strong overall, it was Magnus Carlsen’s response to his defeat at the hands of Gukesh Dommaraju that truly stole the spotlight.
