I can hardly contain my excitement as the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 is set to debut next week, on June 5! Being a fan who’s always cherished its unique hybrid design that makes it an exceptional platform for RPGs, I eagerly anticipate revisiting a host of remarkable titles on the new console through backward compatibility.
From ports and exclusives to first-party games, there’s a wealth of content that piques my interest. This article will delve into Nintendo Switch games, either receiving dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases, undergoing compatibility updates, or simply playable via backward compatibility. At this point, we’re still waiting on official details about how unpatched Switch games will function on the Nintendo Switch 2, but it’s rumored that load times may see some improvements. Any technical enhancements mentioned are speculative for now.
The top 10 Switch RPGs we want to revisit on Nintendo Switch 2
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Without a doubt, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was bound to kick off our showcase. Being an ardent admirer of all Nintendo Warriors games since I played Hyrule Warriors Legends on New 3DS, Age of Calamity presented some technical hurdles with subpar performance and graphics. This represented a significant drop from Fire Emblem Warriors, but I harbored optimism for enhancements through potential updates. With hopes high, I’ll be installing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity on my Nintendo Switch 2 in the future to hopefully enjoy a smoother gaming experience. While the gameplay and music were enjoyable, the technical issues marred the overall experience – ones that I hope will be resolved through backward compatibility on the Switch 2.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but express my anticipation for the visual and performance upgrades coming to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Even now, I’m intrigued to explore these new regions on my Nintendo Switch, especially without the current updates that have caused some technical hiccups. Despite the issues I encountered with Pokémon Violet, I still had a great time immersed in its world.
I find myself agreeing wholeheartedly with James’ review – it’s only a matter of time before the upcoming free update to the game on the Nintendo Switch 2 transforms my experience into one that’s truly enjoyable without any major caveats.
And speaking of updates, I can hardly wait to see how Pokémon Legends: Arceus performs on the Switch 2 as well! The concept already has me hooked, and I believe the enhanced hardware will take this adventure to new heights.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Among all games in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, none have captivated me quite like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, with its spellbinding cast, enchanting music, and compelling narrative – especially considering its exceptional expansion. However, it’s fair to say that the base game underperforms compared to other Xenoblade releases in terms of technical prowess, suffering from performance issues, lower resolution, and disappointing sharpness. This can make for a less than optimal experience, particularly when playing on a handheld device.
Even though I hold this game dear, I eagerly await the day it will reach its full potential through backward compatibility on the Nintendo Switch 2. Regrettably, I haven’t returned to it since 2019; given the visual advancements made within the series since 2017, my upcoming revisit promises to be even more captivating and exciting.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Link’s Awakening
On Nintendo Switch 2, both The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening have been confirmed for free updates, enhancing the gaming experience. I can’t wait to replay them again without feeling motion sickness, especially with Link’s Awakening, as Echoes of Wisdom was less problematic in this regard despite running slightly worse. With visual and performance upgrades that include HDR, it seems like a no-brainer to dive back into these games in the near future.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Among the Nintendo Switch games I adore, Fire Emblem: Three Houses stands out as a perennial favorite that I revisit via replays and delve deeper into its world with Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. While it had technical glitches, it was still an exceptional game. I eagerly anticipate potential enhancements when playing both games on the hypothetical Nintendo Switch 2, assuming backward compatibility is implemented.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
Although Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is playable on various systems, many players, including myself, have invested over 500 hours into our primary save on the Nintendo Switch. An update or enhancement tailored specifically for the platform by Capcom would be desirable, but if the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 can address the performance issues, such as those experienced in the Flooded Forest and even late-game hunts during Sunbreak, it would provide a compelling reason to revisit Capcom’s fantastic Sunbreak release.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Editions
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel excited about the prospect of diving back into not one, but two iconic Zelda adventures – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – on my Nintendo Switch 2! With these upgrades included in the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, it seems like a perfect opportunity for both newcomers and long-time fans to revisit these landmark titles. Ever since the console’s unveiling, Nintendo has been teasing us with sneak peeks of the enhancements and fresh content that await us in these timeless classics. I can hardly wait!
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition
Although Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition came out just a few months ago, it currently encounters some performance issues in crowded areas and has noticeable lag with input responses. With any luck, Nintendo will roll out an upgrade or update to optimize the game for the Nintendo Switch 2, improving its playability. If not, I’m keen on revisiting the game to see how it performs in handheld mode and if it feels more responsive on the Nintendo Switch 2.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues to be one of the most impressive Nintendo Switch conversions of its generation, yet it didn’t quite match up to other platforms when it comes to user experience. As a player who logged over 120 hours on the Switch in both handheld and docked modes, I’m eager to discover how the enhanced performance and resolution might improve with the more advanced hardware of the Switch 2. Additionally, I’m excited to explore how the Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition fares in comparison, considering the previews we’ve had so far.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a fantastic Role-Playing Game that can be enjoyed on PC, though the Switch version has had some issues with performance despite boasting impressive graphics whether in docked or handheld mode. Having played it on both platforms, I’m optimistic that the Switch 2 version will see improved stability in terms of frame rate, making gameplay smoother compared to the current state.
