HBO’s second installment of “The Last of Us” is based on the popular 2020 video game “The Last of Us Part II,” the much-anticipated follow-up to the 2013 PS3 game, which garnered both critical acclaim and divided fan opinions despite its success. Unlike the first season, which adapted the entirety of the first game, the dual storyline in “The Last of Us Part II” necessitated multiple seasons according to showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. This decision also led to several alterations in the narrative compared to the original game, with some differences particularly noticeable in the Season 2 finale.
During the climax of season 2’s finale, I found myself on the edge of my seat as Ellie (Bella Ramsey) ventured towards Seattle’s aquarium, a place she believed Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) was hiding. However, it wasn’t Abby she encountered; instead, she came across Owen (Spencer Lord) and Mel (Ariela Barer) in hiding. The ensuing interaction was filled with tension that took an unexpected turn. Unlike the game, where Ellie brutally killed both characters, here, Owen met a swift end, and unfortunately, Mel was the one I saw Ellie accidentally taking down.
A fresh ‘making-of’ clip, now available on social media, offers an additional take of the scene that was filmed, and it aligns more closely with the game’s narrative. You can watch it below as Bella Ramsey and Spencer Lord deliver intricate fight sequences that echo their characters’ battles in the game. Nevertheless, Mazin opted for a distinct portrayal of the intense encounter instead.
Craig Mazin’s Changes to ‘The Last of Us’ Continue to be Divisive
As a passionate cinephile, I found myself intrigued by Chris Mazin’s decision to alter Ellie and Owen’s fight scene in the series, as revealed during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. This adjustment was primarily due to the stark contrast in their physical stature: Ramsey is barely over five feet, whereas Lord towers above at well over six feet. This height difference made any struggle between them seem somewhat unrealistic to me. However, it’s clear that some fans on social media were not pleased with this change, expressing their disappointment openly.
As a film enthusiast, I personally wouldn’t mind if the show didn’t stick strictly to realism regarding ‘Ramsey’s Ellie’. I’d rather see her portrayed in a more brutally violent manner, similar to how she is in the game, even if it seems illogical for her smaller size. However, another viewer might argue that such changes can be inconsistent, pointing out that the initial episode showed Ellie fighting a bigger character, implying she could handle larger opponents. This inconsistency has sparked debate among fans, as some prefer a more realistic portrayal of Ellie’s combat skills.
Although Mel and Owen’s deaths in the series seemed less physically brutal than some fans anticipated, they were still incredibly emotional and poignant, perhaps even more so due to their lack of a darker edge. This emotional finale left viewers eagerly anticipating season 3, which is yet to start production. With plans for a fourth season on the horizon, it will be intriguing to witness how the upcoming episodes delve deeper into the narrative of the second game.
