Stranger Things Season 5 Release Schedule Confusing Fans and Sparks Frustration

As a movie aficionado, I can’t help but express my excitement over the thrilling updates Netflix dished out during their annual TUDUM event last month, which I had the pleasure of following via live blog. Amongst all the buzz surrounding the second season of ‘Wednesday’, the upcoming ‘Knives Out’ sequel, and numerous other announcements, the eagerly anticipated release dates for ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 truly stole the show!

While I’m ecstatic about this news in general, I must admit that I was taken aback by their decision to unveil the series over a strangely staggered holiday schedule rather than opting for a more conventional all-at-once release. However, knowing ‘Stranger Things’, I’m confident it will still be an incredible ride!

Let’s clarify the reasons why this method might be perplexing and aggravating, particularly as we approach the holiday season. However, before diving in…

When Stranger Things Season 5 Will Stream Its Various “Volumes”

A fresh video of “Stranger Things” was revealed at Tudum, providing eager fans a glimpse into when they can reunite with the Byers family and numerous other Hawkins inhabitants once more. Unlike previous years where the series premiered during summer or close to Halloween, this time Netflix is going big with a year-end holiday launch, as demonstrated in the following:

  • Volume One: November 26
  • Volume Two: December 25
  • Series Finale: December 31

If the show incorporates themes and decorations related to Thanksgiving and Christmas, then the timing seems reasonable for those holidays. However, that’s essentially where the connection ends.

I Do Love When Netflix Moves Away From Its All-At-Once Release Model

I recognize that the on-demand style of Netflix’s series releases is adored by countless fans, but I also understand not everyone might share my viewpoint. However, from my perspective, shows that roll out episodes weekly foster a sense of shared excitement and anticipation, sparking conversations both online and in our daily lives – a phenomenon often referred to as “water-cooler talk.

As a devoted fan of “Stranger Things,” I ponder over the possibility that its fifth season could have been released episodically over a span of two whole months if each episode were to air weekly. This theoretical scenario suggests an escalating viewership, with initial numbers likely swelling and reaching new heights as anticipation builds up week by week. Yet, while I’m excited that Netflix opted for a more drawn-out release rather than the typical binge-worthy model, I find myself left bewildered by the choice of an alternative plan instead.

But This Holiday-Set Plan For Stranger Things Season 5 Just Feels Slapdash

As a movie enthusiast, I understand that Netflix doesn’t control the dates of holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. It wouldn’t be feasible for them to delay the new year to accommodate more time for Stranger Things‘ final season. However, they do have the power to schedule the finale on a date that doesn’t coincide with the last day of the year, considering many people are busy celebrating holidays at that time.

It seems clear that airing shows during holiday periods caters well to school-going audiences, as they can watch without worrying too much about missing classes, and it encourages more family viewing during gatherings. However, I’m not entirely comfortable with the concept of making fans wait a whole month between new episodes, followed by weekly releases. This is particularly true when each episode is a full-length feature.

It appears that the platform might accomplish similar theoretical objectives by launching individual episodes weekly, beginning on November 19 – a week prior to Thanksgiving. This schedule would allow it to conclude by New Year’s Eve without any complications.

I’m Also Iffy About Evening P.M. Releases Rather Than The Usual Overnight Drops

Despite my acceptance of the unconventional rollout schedule for the upcoming episodes, I’d still find it surprising when the exact release time shifts for the new Stranger Things episodes. Unlike Netflix’s consistent midnight PST releases (requiring East Coast viewers to stay up until 3:00 a.m. to watch shows immediately), the new Stranger Things episodes will debut at 5:00 p.m. PST, which is a change that better aligns with prime-time television scheduling.

If the decision-makers opted to release most of their new series during the evening hours instead of early morning, I wouldn’t grumble too much because I generally prefer watching favorite shows in the evening rather than at dawn. This move would align with Netflix’s live events and specials that are also scheduled for nighttime viewing.

If the last season of “Stranger Things” is going to buck the trend by not being released overnight, and this method won’t be applied to future releases either, it leaves me wondering what makes this moment in time the right one for the company to change its strategy.

More On Stranger Things’ Final Season

The Final Day Filming Stranger Things Was ‘More Emotional Than You’ve Heard,’ And I Have Questions

In general, streaming platforms like Amazon, Disney+, Apple TV+ have effectively managed the release strategy of shows, offering some for binge-watching while others are rolled out weekly. It’s hard to believe that Netflix, with their original series, doesn’t seem to adopt this same approach, instead opting for an unpredictable decision like releasing 3 or 4 episodes every month, spaced a week apart. This pattern seems rather random and unusual compared to other services.

Despite any reservations, doubts, or puzzlement I might have, I’m definitely going to catch the premiere of the final season of Stranger Things when it airs on Wednesday, November 26.
