James Gunn recently debunked a widely-held theory concerning the 2025 movie “Superman,” and it all started with a promotional ad for toys. This past week, Gunn revealed a sneak peek of the new “Superman vs. Kaiju Battle Pack,” which is part of the upcoming line of toys directly connected to a significant battle scene in the film.
As a die-hard movie buff, let me tell you about an exciting collection I recently stumbled upon. It features action figures of Superman and his Justice Squad – Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, and Green Lantern (available separately). But the real showstopper is this colossal Kaiju monster looming above our heroes! The ad brings back nostalgic vibes of those iconic Nickelodeon commercials, even complete with a touch of slime.
Indeed, spectators started guessing among themselves in the comments what might happen to the beast, with a particular focus on whether Superman would be the one to eliminate it. A fan even posed this question directly to Gunn: “Will Superman end up killing the Kaiju?
Gunn’s response? “Not actual footage from the film.”
Gunn’s response hints that the toy might not be indicative of a significant storyline in the movie, so fans shouldn’t jump to conclusions. We’ll have to wait until the film hits theaters on July 11, 2025, to find out for sure.

What’s Going on With the Kaiju?
In the upcoming movie, one of the seven main antagonists, known as the Kaiju, has been teased in both trailers for Superman. A notable scene features a foot resembling Godzilla’s, poised to squash a woman, but Superman interferes at the last moment. Another intriguing instance displays the beast exhaling fire, and we catch a quick peek of Superman charging in for a powerful punch.
But the new toyline suggests there’s more to this monster than meets the eye.
Alongside the primary Kaiju character, other toy versions also present smaller variations: one called Baby Joey, appearing more like an affectionate mascot than a menacing figure, and another mid-level version known as Baby Kaiju. It seems this creature isn’t just any random beast. Given James Gunn’s penchant for unusual, emotionally rich monsters, it could be that Baby Kaiju is misunderstood or perhaps manipulated in some way.
This collection of toys seems to show a clear progression, from Tiny Toddler Groot to Monster Kaiju. It could also suggest that Big Mama Kaiju misses her little one, but remember, it’s all just guesswork.
Considering the concept of evolution, it’s not unreasonable to think that this Kaiju might not be the antagonist per se, but rather a tool manipulated by someone like Lex Luthor or another powerful adversary, stirring up chaos in Metropolis as a diversion to keep Superman and his allies preoccupied.
Will the Kaiju Die in the Movie?
The crucial question here, worth a million dollars, doesn’t get a clear-cut negative answer from Gunn. The situation is further complicated because the toy, the Kaiju, comes with a disturbing element: if you fill it with gooey substance, you can reenact a gory scene by breaking the figures into it, simulating an “exploding innards” effect.
It could simply be a playful gadget… or a potential reveal for a significant action scene in the movie.
According to Gunn’s account, there’s a possibility that the scene might deviate from what the toy portrays. Instead, Superman could choose to spare the creature when he recognizes it’s under control, potentially developing a connection with it, reminiscent of classic comic book relationships.
Regardless of how the Kaiju’s story unfolds (you can find more thoughts on this topic by TopMob), this scene seems to be a significant action sequence in the movie. With Superman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific joining forces to tackle an enormous menace, it feels like we’re witnessing the kind of epic conflict that establishes team dynamics at the start of a new universe.
