Martin Scorsese might be planning another gangster movie, this time potentially in partnership with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Eric Roth. Known as one of the great directors of our time, Scorsese is renowned for his gripping crime dramas such as “Taxi Driver,” “Goodfellas,” “The Irishman,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Eric Roth won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1995 for “Forrest Gump” and has written critically acclaimed scripts spanning various genres, including “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Mank,” “A Star Is Born,” “Dune: Part One,” among others.
In conversation with David Perell, Eric Roth shared that he is currently developing a script set in New Orleans during 1890, centered on the mafia, and aiming for Martin Scorsese to direct it. As per World of Real, the potential title for this movie could be Midnight Vendetta. The primary characters seem to have ties with the initial Sicilian Mafia, and the narrative focuses on a vengeance scheme against an adversary. Here’s what Roth had to say about the project:
In a recent endeavor for Marty, I’ve penned a captivating script set in 1890s New Orleans, delving deep into themes of vengeance and identity. This project serves as an exploration of how our upbringing shapes us, as the characters were raised amidst the mafia in Sicily during the 1860s-70s.
As I craft this story for Marty, I find myself grappling with the question of what we’re taught to become and who we ultimately become. One particularly intriguing scene unfolds as our protagonist—though he may not be heroic in the traditional sense—pursues vengeance against his rival Don. In a daring move during an opera performance, he sneaks in undetected and delivers a deadly blow to his enemy by slitting his throat.
This scene encapsulates the complexities of our characters’ desires for justice and their struggle with their pasts as members of the mafia. I can hardly wait to see how this story unfolds on the big screen!
What Midnight Vendetta Means For Martin Scorsese’s Upcoming Projects
Scorsese Will Probably Want To Direct, But Will Be Pressed To Fit It Into His Schedule
Martin Scorsese’s upcoming mobster film is likely to be a strong contender for awards and is sure to delight longtime fans of the director and lovers of crime-genre movies. The storyline bears some resemblance to “The Godfather,” focusing on the Sicilian Mafia, set in an era predating the Corleone family’s active years as depicted in Francis Ford Coppola’s trilogy. It seems that Roth aims to return to the genre’s foundations where Scorsese has built his reputation.
In the next few years, Scorsese will find himself quite occupied. His long-time partner, Leonardo DiCaprio, is slated to appear in “Devil in the White City,” a historical drama centered around serial killer HH Holmes. Additionally, both films are adapted from scripts written by Martin Scorsese’s frequent collaborator, Richard Roth, with “Killers of the Flower Moon” being another one. Given their professional history and the script’s subject matter aligning well with Scorsese’s strengths as a director, it seems highly probable that he would want to be involved. However, due to his busy schedule, it may take a backseat for now.
Our Take On Eric Roth’s Screenplay For Martin Scorsese
Everyone Will Be Ready For Scorsese’s Take On The Godfather
Instead of Devil in the White City, I’d prefer to watch a different movie that Martin Scorsese is currently developing. The intriguing blend of New Orleans history and the emergence of the mafia, along with an opera backdrop for a revenge storyline, promises a rich narrative. Moreover, I’m excited about the prospect of seeing Scorsese collaborate with fresh acting talents, particularly for the roles of young mafia family members who could be rising stars. Indeed, with Scorsese delving into the crime genre again, we can anticipate another masterpiece, as his upcoming projects are quite promising.
