Clint Eastwood Plans to Direct New Movie at 95, Shades ‘Era of Remakes and Franchises’: ‘Do Something New or Stay at Home’

Clint Eastwood isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

In a recent conversation with the Austrian newspaper Kurier (through Reuters), Eastwood, who celebrates his 95th birthday this coming Saturday, mentioned that he is actively working on pre-production for his upcoming movie. He also reassured fans that they need not fret about his retirement in the near future.

Eastwood stated that it’s entirely possible for a man to improve as he grows older. He emphasized his increased wisdom and experience today. While some directors may struggle past a certain age, Eastwood doesn’t share this fate.

The “Unforgiven” director expressed his longing for a time when movie theaters weren’t so saturated with remakes, follow-ups, and films based on previously established intellectual properties, when asked about the present state of cinema.

He yearns for the past, when screenwriters crafted movies like ‘Casablanca’ in humble bungalows on studio lots. Back then, everyone was brimming with fresh ideas, he noted. Today, we seem stuck in an age of remakes and franchises. I’ve filmed sequels three times, but that’s not what excites me anymore. My belief is: either create something new or stay idle at home.

Eastwood explained how growing up within the traditional Hollywood setup compelled him to consistently reinvent himself as an artist and stay alert for the next groundbreaking film concept.

In his acting career, Eastwood was bound by a contract with a studio and operated under the old system, which meant he had to continuously pick up new skills each year. He stated that he’d continue working as long as there’s still something new to learn or until he becomes completely forgetful.
