The American Western series “Horizon: An American Saga,” led by Kevin Costner as director, actor, co-writer, and producer, is once more embroiled in a legal dispute as the team strives to secure funding for the remaining installments of the project which has been under development since 1988. The debut chapter of the series, released in the summer of 2024, was met with unfavorable reviews by critics and the franchise’s future has remained uncertain ever since. As fans await the release of “Chapter 2,” the production is now facing multiple lawsuits.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the most recent legal dispute involves the United Costume Corporation taking legal action against Kevin Costner’s firm, Horizon Series. In their lawsuit, they claim that Horizon failed to fulfill a contractual obligation, specifically by not paying an invoice totaling $58,000 for costumes rented for Chapter 1, and another invoice totaling $285,000 for Chapter 2. The United Costume Corporation is suing for approximately $350,000 to cover these unpaid costs. At the time of reporting, Horizon Series has not issued a statement regarding this lawsuit.
What This Means For Costner And Horizon
The New Lawsuit Joins A Compilation Of Controversies For Horizon
Prior to the recent lawsuit, the Horizon movie series had been encountering significant hurdles. The first chapter underperformed at the box office, bringing in $38.7 million against a production budget of $50 million, which in turn led to delays for Chapter 2. Despite being planned as a four-part series, it seems that Kevin Costner is still searching for additional funding to complete filming for Chapters 3 and 4, as reported by THR. This lawsuit, along with several others reported this month, will likely add to the difficulties in achieving these goals.
In a recent turn of events, I’ve found myself embroiled in a legal dispute. New Line Cinema has filed an arbitration claim against Horizon Series, following City National Bank’s initiation of proceedings against both New Line and Horizon Series, apparently due to breaches concerning our co-financing agreement. At present, I’m seeking financial support to counter City National Bank’s actions.
Interestingly, earlier this week, my stunt double, Devyn LaBella, took legal action against Horizon. She claims that she was compelled to take part in an unplanned sexual assault scene without the presence of an intimacy coordinator. Furthermore, she alleges that she faced reprisals after voicing her discomfort about the situation.
Our Take On Horizon’s Newest Lawsuit
Horizon’s Future Is Grim
The recently filed lawsuit is simply the most recent challenge that the “Horizon: An American Saga” has encountered since its debut in Chapter 1. This project has been a labor of love for Kevin Costner, who is said to have invested millions of his own funds into the film series. However, the reception from cinema-goers has been underwhelming. With the disappointing box office performance of “Horizon”, ongoing financial problems, and lawsuits, this series is currently facing bleak prospects. Although a $350,000 lawsuit may not be catastrophic for a multi-million-dollar production, it is just another worry as Costner strives to complete the series.
