Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan have been announced to be part of the cast for David Fincher’s upcoming Netflix project, reportedly a follow-up to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” According to sources, they will appear alongside Brad Pitt, who is set to reprise his award-winning role as Cliff Booth from the original film. The script has been penned by Quentin Tarantino, who was also the writer and director of the first movie.
Despite the idea of continuing “Once Upon a Time” being seen by some Tarantino and Fincher fans as an unlikely scenario, the growing number of actors attached suggests that the project is gradually picking up momentum, possibly aiming for a summer filming start in California.
Netflix had no comment.
The project is shrouded in mystery, as it developed following Quentin Tarantino’s abandonment of the planned 10th (and supposedly last) film titled “The Movie Critic.” A script for this movie existed, and Brad Pitt was cast as the main character. Set in the 70s, the story revolved around a film critic who wrote for an adult magazine. There were whispers that Pitt would embody a character similar to Cliff Booth from “Once Upon a Time,” a role where his character in Tarantino’s novelization demonstrated a deep appreciation for cinema (but beware discussing Kurosawa’s movies after “Red Beard” with him). However, the extent to which “The Movie Critic” has been incorporated into the yet-unnamed “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” sequel remains uncertain.
Tarantino is known primarily for his role as a writer-director, but he has penned several screenplays that he didn’t ultimately direct, such as Tony Scott’s “True Romance” and Robert Rodriguez’s “From Dusk till Dawn”. For Fincher, this will be his third straight Netflix production, following the Oscar-nominated period drama “Mank” and the darkly comedic workday film “The Killer.”

Though Tarantino is renowned for both writing and directing films, he has written scripts that he didn’t end up directing, like Tony Scott’s “True Romance” and Robert Rodriguez’s “From Dusk till Dawn”. Fincher, on the other hand, will be making his third Netflix film in a row, having directed “Mank”, an Oscar-nominated period piece, and “The Killer”, a black comedy set during work hours.

Interestingly, Debicki recently appeared in another production, this one set in the mid-20th century showbiz era for Ti West’s slasher film “MaXXXine,” released last year. She previously won an Emmy for her role as Princess Diana in Netflix’s “The Crown.” On the other hand, Caan has worked alongside Pitt in Steven Soderbergh’s “Ocean’s” heist trilogy. At present, he features in Fox’s “Alert: Missing Persons Unit,” which recently concluded its Season 3.
I was thrilled to learn that What’s on Netflix broke the news about Debicki potentially joining the cast, and it was The Hollywood Reporter who initially shared the exciting update about Caan’s role in the film.
