Kevin Williamson on Why He Returned to Directing, Reuniting With Neve Campbell in ‘Scream 7’: ‘It Needs to Be About Sidney’

Kevin Williamson is opening up about working with Neve Campbell again on “Scream 7.”

The writer of the initial screenplay for the 1996 movie “Scream,” named Williamson, hasn’t previously directed the series, but he is returning for the forthcoming film due to several factors, primarily the narrative itself.

He stated during the ATX TV Festival that the project was of interest to him because it focused on Sidney Prescott, a character they felt needed exploration. He believes there’s an unexplored aspect of her story – we haven’t delved into her personal life or current existence. He’s eager to uncover more about her and understand what her life is like today.

Following her reappearance in “Scream” for the year 2022, Campbell didn’t show up in “Scream 6.” She mentioned that the pay offered wasn’t commensurate with the worth she had contributed to the franchise. Previously, Williamson had openly expressed his opinion that she should receive a higher compensation.

The issue of unequal pay was raised, yet it extended beyond that. It was more like, ‘I’d be thrilled to appear at the climax of the movie brandishing a gun and helping everyone take down Ghostface.’ He admitted this with enthusiasm. However, he also desired a role. Actresses crave parts, he explained during the panel. Fortunately, we were able to capitalize on this and devise a solution. Working alongside Neve, we collaborated closely. She was by my side throughout the process, offering guidance and support. She guided me through many aspects of it. I hope our collaboration is evident, but we had a wonderful time doing it.

The seventh installment of ‘Scream,’ titled as such, is penned by Guy Busick, with the original concept coming from James Vanderbilt and Busick. The movie is slated for release in February 2026.
