This week, Electronic Arts (EA) announced the termination of their forthcoming Black Panther video game and the shutdown of its development studio, Cliffhanger Games. A fresh account offers additional insight into the circumstances leading up to the game’s cancellation and its intended concept.
According to Bloomberg’s report, the Black Panther game has reached a significant development phase, with the project picking up speed. However, insiders claim that EA executives are displeased because the game is still in its early stages after nearly four years of labor. Following an assessment of their portfolio, it seems that EA decided to cancel games that had been in development for an extended period without making significant headway. This decision reportedly affected the Black Panther project as well.
Additionally, reports suggest that along with the cancellation of several titles, Respawn Entertainment (the studio behind Apex Legends and Titanfall) also scrapped a new Titanfall project in their ongoing development process.
The upcoming Black Panther game by EA is set to expand upon concepts that Kevin Stephens, who previously worked on Cliffhanger as a boss at Warner Bros., developed for the Shadow of Mordor series, notably the Nemesis system. This system is expected to feature prominently in the Black Panther game, allowing players to control characters such as T’Challa, Killmonger, and Shuri, each striving to assume the mantle of the new Black Panther.
As a gamer, I was getting ready to face off against the Skrull shapeshifters who had invaded Wakanda. It’s tricky because some of these guys might be disguised as my allies, learning from my tactics like the orcs in Shadow of Mordor do after repeated encounters. So I need to stay alert and adapt my strategies on the fly!
In my perspective, it was quite a challenge for us developers to articulate the unique aspects that set our Black Panther game apart during meetings with management. The dual task of simultaneously creating a game and establishing a new studio certainly added complexity to our progress, as suggested in the report.
After the termination of the game, members of the development team expressed their appreciation for the work accomplished, expressing hope that it would have been an outstanding game. Although the Black Panther game has been shelved, Electronic Arts (EA) continues to develop an Iron Man game and various other Marvel projects as part of a multi-project agreement with Marvel.
The game developed by EA titled “Black Panther” has ceased production, however, Amy Hennig’s Marvel project, “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra,” will showcase Black Panther as a significant character. Originally scheduled for release earlier, the game is now set to launch in 2026.
