As a dedicated fan of ‘Ghosts’, I’m excitedly sharing my experience as I stepped behind the camera for the very first time to direct an episode in season 4. My character, Sam, has been on quite a journey since moving into the quirky Woodstone B&B, inherited from my great aunt and inhabited by a motley crew of ghosts. Balancing the intricacies of our supernatural storyline with the struggles of adapting to life with these spectral roommates is no easy feat, especially when managing such a talented ensemble cast. However, I found directing myself and my fellow actors this season to be an enjoyable challenge that I’m eager to tackle again!
In an interview with Variety, McIver shared her experience of directing an episode in Ghosts season 4 for the first time and how she relished bringing the vision of the showrunners to life. Instead of feeling anxious, McIver was thrilled about her directorial debut and eagerly embraced this new role, particularly since it was for a show that holds a special place in her heart.
What attracts me about directing this project is diving into an established world, functioning as a hired hand, and interpreting the vision of the showrunners accurately. I enjoy working towards their goals rather than imposing my own. Some directors of episodic TV might feel constrained by not having creative freedom. However, I relish the opportunity to understand their objectives and discover how to achieve them.
What Rose McIver Directing An Episode Of Ghosts Means For Season 5
Collaborative Directors Work Best In Network TV
It’s possible that McIver will take up the director role once more in Ghosts season 5, considering she previously directed the highly successful episode “Ghostfellas” in season 4. Given the success of that particular episode, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the showrunners, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, invite McIver to direct another episode in the upcoming season.
Working as a director in television differs significantly from working in movies, given that television production is a fast-paced and continuous environment. Directors aiming for full creative control often struggle in episodic network TV due to the necessity of writing new episodes every week. As a result, showrunners, who are typically tasked with scriptwriting, don’t direct, leaving room for other directors to focus on post-production while they work on upcoming scripts. A seasoned professional like McIver, who appreciates the collaborative aspects of TV production, could bring valuable insights to the directorial team of Ghosts season 5 if she decides to return.
Our Take On Rose Stepping Into The Director’s Chair
Actors Often Make The Best Directors
McIver’s collaborative approach to directing might prove advantageous for season 5 and beyond of Ghosts. Actors-turned-directors often excel in this role because they grasp the workings from both sides of the camera. This dual understanding makes them more empathetic towards actors, appreciating their motivations and thought processes – a significant asset for a series like Ghosts, which boasts such a vast ensemble cast. By leveraging her acting background, McIver could bring a unique, innovative perspective to the execution of the showrunner’s vision, should she direct future episodes.
