A Japanese video game developer is making a concerted effort to popularize characters based on anthropomorphic animals within the gaming community, even stating that his goal is to “influence” or “persuade” others to appreciate these types of characters more deeply.
The dev behind Fuga: Melodies of Steel, a tactical role-playing series where players control a gigantic tank as it makes its way through a war-ravaged world, has spoken up about the recent trend of furry content and how he aims to popularize the use of furry characters in video games.
If you’re unfamiliar, the Fuga series features anthropomorphic characters resembling humans and employs a combat system where turns are taken sequentially. The initial installment garnered exceptionally positive feedback on Steam in 2021, with gamers commending its emotionally engaging narrative and endearing cast of characters.
In a speech marking the launch of their last game in the series, CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama discussed his team’s longstanding tradition of developing games with anthropomorphic characters and his aspiration to make these ‘furry’ themes more mainstream.
Dev wants to expand “furry-loving” fandom
In an interview with Automaton, Matsuyama stated that since the start, our efforts have been focused on promoting the culture of furry enthusiasts. He used the term “brainwashing,” but it’s important to note that he likely meant influencing or introducing people to this culture in a passionate and persistent way.
Although furry content is often viewed as specialized or uncommon, we firmly trust that it will eventually become mainstream – a conviction that fuels everything we’ve done up until now. I believe those of you reading this will be among those present when this shift happens.
The creator expresses that although Fuga 3 concludes the series, he aims to carry on creating games centered around the furry theme, fostering a larger community. Essentially, he invites everyone to join in this shared love for the furry world, considering them as family members already.
On the 29th of May, the third installment of Fuga: Melodies of Steel became available for play. You can enjoy it on a variety of platforms such as PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X.
