Patrick Wren, the Lead Designer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, has voiced his worries about the current morale within Respawn Entertainment studio. In his own words, he described the spirit among the team behind Apex Legends and Titanfall as being at an “all-time low.” The reason for this negative atmosphere isn’t explicitly stated, but it is likely due to a string of decisions made by Electronic Arts, such as cancelling three projects over the past two years.
Morale is at its lowest point ever, as clearly indicated by Wren’s recent post on BlueSky.
In 2023, it was planned that EA would halt the collaboration between Titanfall and Apex Legends, and a year later, another project by Respawn Entertainment was shelved – an FPS in the Star Wars universe, which starred The Mandalorian. Simultaneously, in March of this year, EA decided to discontinue work on a secretive shooter game they had been developing.
Currently, the team at Respawn Entertainment, working diligently on the third installment of the Star Wars Jedi series, certainly find themselves with ample tasks to keep them engaged. However, it’s important to note that occasional low spirits among team members could potentially impact their work and ultimately, the final product’s quality.
Slim chances for Star Wars: Battlefront 3
Enthusiasts eager for another installment in the Star Wars: Battlefront series by EA may find their anticipation unfulfilled. In a recent leak, IGN obtained an internal email stating that Electronic Arts’ CEO, Laura Miele, mentioned a limited number of franchises they plan to prioritize moving forward: Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends.
Since none of the listed brands include Star Wars (excluding the third installment of Star Wars Jedi currently in production), this might imply that Electronic Arts has wrapped up their popular first-person shooter series based in a far-off galaxy.
The data shared earlier was posted on the Star Wars Battlefront subreddit, and predictably, it sparked a great deal of discontent among its users. Interestingly, Battlefront II has just set a new activity record on Steam. This surge in popularity seems to have been triggered by an actor from the show Andor encouraging people to play the game, leading even more players to log in.
Users on the internet express their dismay and suggest potential developers for a revival of Star Wars: Battlefront, other than EA. One suggestion is Arrowhead studio, known for creating Helldivers. Yet, some counter that only EA has the necessary expertise to deliver the desired installment in the series.
And it was supposed to be so beautiful…
Compared to the discontent of ex-employees from the now-defunct Cliffhanger Games, the demoralization among Respawn Entertainment’s team and the letdown of Star Wars Battlefront fans is minor.
They openly grapple with accepting the current circumstances, particularly because Electronic Arts’ decision led to the termination of work on Black Panther as well. As stated by concept artist Karla Ortiz, it was “incredibly impressive and awe-inspiring” (via BlueSky), much like another suspended superhero game.
