As a die-hard movie fan, I can’t contain my excitement! The running time for the highly anticipated superhero film, set to hit theaters in July, has been unveiled at last. This upcoming blockbuster is not just any ordinary movie; it’s the grand reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise on the silver screen.
As stated, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” spans approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes (130 mins), making it the longest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in 2023. In comparison, the third installment of James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” series ran for a total of two and a half hours. The other MCU films released between “First Steps” and “Volume 3,” including “Captain America: Brave New World” (118 mins), “Thunderbolts*” (126 mins), and “Deadpool & Wolverine” (128 mins), have generally been around the 2-hour mark, with “The Marvels” being an exception at just 105 minutes.
*Note: The movie title for Thunderbolts has not yet been officially confirmed.
In terms of length, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will be the longest film adaptation of Marvel’s First Family to date. This upcoming movie is expected to run longer than any previous adaptations, surpassing even the 2005 version which clocked in at 106 minutes, making it the longest Fantastic Four film so far. The unreleased 1994 movie by Constantin Film was said to be 90 minutes long, while “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” from 20th Century Fox ran for just two minutes more (92 minutes).
The Fantastic Four: First Steps Is Set in Its Own Reality
Just like Deadpool, Wolverine, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four: First Steps exists in a separate reality from the mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), featuring a unique, retro-futuristic world reminiscent of the 1960s. Previously, some members of the Fantastic Four have made appearances in MCU movies, with John Krasinski portraying Earth-838’s Mister Fantastic and Chris Evans as The Void’s Human Torch. However, First Steps will introduce the primary version of this iconic team.
Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach make their Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) appearances as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing respectively, in the movie First Steps. This film presents Marvel’s First Family with their toughest challenge yet. With the need to juggle their duties as superheroes and the power of their familial ties, they must protect Earth from a hungry cosmic deity known as Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his mysterious Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). The situation becomes even more personal when not only the entire planet but also everyone on it is threatened by Galactus’ plan.
Regardless of having their own universe, the Fantastic Four will encounter the Avengers (and New Avengers) in the movie “Avengers: Doomsday”. The original cast members Pascal, Kirby, Quinn, and Moss-Bachrach are set to return for this production, which is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. At present, the storyline is tightly guarded, but it’s known that Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., will serve as the primary villain, and characters from the X-Men franchise played by actors from 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men” series will also feature.
Under the guidance of director Matt Shakman, the movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will debut in cinemas on July 25, marking the beginning of Phase 6 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
