Uttera Singh takes on various roles, including that of a director, for her first major project “Pinch,” which will have its global debut in competition at the Tribeca Festival.
The heartwarming mother-daughter comedy-drama written, directed, produced, and starring Singh, has been chosen for the International Narrative Competition at Tribeca. This is the first Indian film to contest in this category in a span of three years.
Singh portrays Maitri, a globetrotting video blogger who resides with her conventional mother Shobha (played by Geeta Agrawal) within a closely-knit apartment building community. A controversial event that transpires during a collective religious pilgrimage is initially ignored, but eventually forces the mother-daughter pair to deal with the complex emotional fallout in a tense and confined examination of truth, tradition, and the hidden costs of secrecy.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m drawn to the captivating work of a filmmaker who graduated from USC School of Cinematic Arts and now calls Los Angeles home. This artist masterfully infuses a darkly comical tone into heavy themes, making bold statements about subjects that society often overlooks or dismisses as insignificant. In crafting this story, the filmmaker aimed to create a stir about these seemingly small matters, saying, “I wanted to make a big impact with what is typically brushed aside.”
There exists a more somber interpretation of this movie, but the director chose to emphasize comedy and vitality to ignite dialogue – and to highlight the absurdity that shrouds the silence surrounding assault. ‘Pinch’ does not claim to have all the answers; instead, it poses questions that demand our attention.
The main actors are joined by Sunita Rajwar (known as Santosh), Sapna Sand, Badri Chavan, Rajiv Neema, Jahnvi Marathe, and Nitish Pandey in this production.
Previously, I had the honor of directing the critically acclaimed short film “Fanny Pack,” which graced more than 45 film festivals across the globe.
The photo was taken on set in Indore, India, with cinematography by Adam Linzey (“The Animal Thing”), who also contributed to the scriptwriting. Natasha Leonnet (“La La Land,” “Hidden Figures”) oversaw color correction, while Madhusudan N. (“Stree”) managed production design.
The music for this production is provided by Raashi Kulkarni (“A Nice Indian Boy,” “Wedding Season”), while the sound design is handled by Jan Bezouska (“Midway,” “They Cloned Tyrone”). Dipika Lal (“Last Days,” “Jawan”) takes care of costume design. The editing team consists of Faroukh Virani, Louise Innes, and Vanessa Ruane.
Faissal Sam Shaib, also known as “Arzé” and “Wyrm”, Jenna Cavelle (known for “Mr. Crocket” and “Young.Wild.Free.”), Jan Bezouska, Anirudh Singh, Akanksha Jain, Pranav Soni, Muktesh Singh, and Suneeta Singh are the creators or producers of this project, with Suneeta Singh being included in the list as well.
Ahead of its June 6 debut, EbMaster is exclusively premiering the official teaser.
