Cyberpunk 2 entered pre-production phase. CD Projekt Red is getting serious about Project Orion, but we’ll be waiting a long time for it

In their Q1 2025 financial report, CD Projekt revealed that the progression of Cyberpunk 2077 has moved into the pre-production phase, which they referred to as “Cyberpunk 2” for the first time. This might suggest that this is the official title for the sequel, having previously been known by the working title Project Orion.

The team responsible for developing the game, Cyberpunk 2077, has grown to include a total of 96 employees now. This expansion from the initial 84 employees was seen in the early months of 2025, with an additional 12 members joining the project.

Regarding the expanding team working on it, there’s still going to be a considerable wait before we can get our hands on Cyberpunk 2. The pre-production phase is an initial step in the project timeline and, as mentioned by Michal Nowakowski, CEO of CD Projekt Group at an investor conference, this stage typically takes CD Projekt RED around “4-5 years” on average. However, it’s important to note that every project is distinct, so they are not ready to commit to a specific release year for Cyberpunk 2 just yet.

Moreover, the minds behind the acclaimed The Witcher franchise have marked a notable achievement with their venture into the initial Cyberpunk. The Phantom Liberty DLC (launched in September 2023) has managed to sell over 10 million copies.
