Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the movie Constantine, recently shared some insights regarding the delay of Constantine 2. He speculates that the reason for the hold-up might be due to franchise star Keanu Reeves not being content with the script for the sequel. The long-awaited follow-up to the 2005 DC Comics film has been in a state of limbo for quite some time now. As recently reported, Reeves and director Francis Lawrence had proposed a storyline to DC Studios, receiving approval to develop a screenplay, but since then, no additional information about the project’s progress has been disclosed.
During a special sit-down with TopMob while gearing up for the release of my 2025 movie “Stand Your Ground” (now streaming on PVOD), I, Peter Stormare, couldn’t help but share some intriguing tidbits I’ve heard regarding the upcoming DC Comics sequel starring Keanu Reeves.
Stormare disclosed that there’s been a great deal of communication back and forth thus far, and it appears that Reeves isn’t entirely satisfied with the screenplays.
There’s a lot of back-and-forth due to the fact that, as I understand quite well, Keanu [Reeves] isn’t too pleased with the scripts, and the ideas often presented by studios aren’t in line with what he envisioned. This is because the original film didn’t perform exceptionally well initially but eventually gained popularity, becoming a cult classic. However, to make a sequel, the studios are pushing for action-packed scenes involving cars flying and people performing acrobatic flips, which seems to be at odds with the original’s style.
Stormare mentioned that Keanu Reeves envisions a film centered around themes of “demons and ordinary individuals,” and he expresses concerns that a potential sequel might stray too far from this concept.
Keanu Reeves suggests that ‘John Wick’ was a spiritual film with themes of demons and everyday people. He wanted to maintain this essence in a potential sequel. I proposed an idea where God appears, dressed in a black suit similar to Lucifer from the first movie. However, since it’s been 12 years, completely mimicking the original might be challenging. Yet, Keanu seems interested in making a sequel that closely resembles the first one.
Keanu Reeves openly expresses his great pride in this character, he stated. Should there be a sequel, he intends to ensure that the production maintains an appropriate context.
It seems he’s extremely fond of that role, as he was determined to bring the character to life which he cherished. And let’s face it, with Tilda Swinton playing Gabriel, it’s a fascinating character. Similarly, my character Lucifer is intriguing and easy to connect with. Originally, they wanted to deck me out in a devilish outfit complete with a tail and pitchfork, but we fought hard for me to wear a minimalistic off-white suit instead.
Stormare revealed that it isn’t necessary to cram in lots of action and gunfights. Instead, keeping true to the elements that made the original film successful should be enough to hold the audience’s interest.
It should maintain the essence of an action movie, but not at the expense of character development. I believe he intends to reprise the role of Constantine, maintaining the grittiness from the original. It didn’t require a large following initially, but it eventually became a cult classic, and I think it can do so again. Adding excessive action or shootouts isn’t necessary; let the story speak for itself. Avoid turning it into a typical Marvel blockbuster with lots of flying stunts and constant fighting. Keep it grounded and true to its roots.
When questioned about his familiarity with these action-packed screenplays, the main character of Constantine admitted that he had not yet read them and that what he knew was just “rumors from Reeves” so far.
His claims are essentially repeats of what he said before, shrouded in mystery. As my colleague and I often say, instead of creating an entirely new film, we should revisit the first one, incorporate some fresh aspects, and voila! You have a sequel. ‘The Godfather 2’ is a prime example of this approach as it expanded upon the original. If presented together, they form a cohesive whole. Therefore, let’s not stray too far from the original concept to maintain consistency. I believe that’s where we stand now.
Since the beginning of the 2010s, a Constantine sequel featuring Keanu Reeves has been in various stages of development, initially proposed by director Francis Lawrence. Over time, key figures like Peter Stormare, Reeves, and Lawrence have been confirmed to reprise their roles for the project.
In February of 2025, it became public knowledge that the team had conferred with DC Studios leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran and received permission to work on a draft for Constantine 2. As per Stormare’s statement, the script for this sequel was yet to be completed.
Will Constantine 2 Happen or Not?
Approximately twenty years since the initial movie’s debut, there seems to be genuine momentum building around a potential sequel titled “Constantine 2“, with Keanu Reeves set as the main character. All that remains is finding the perfect approach to the narrative to ensure both the star and director are content.
In the words of Peter Stormare, there are valid arguments for reviving the Constantine film series after a gap of two decades. If the team decides to proceed with this project, it should be more than just dusting off old material; it needs to be worth the effort and deliver an appropriate sequel.
Currently, the main area of debate seems to revolve around preserving the essence of the original film and avoiding transforming the sequel into something that deviates from what the franchise typically represents.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly waiting for news about Constantine 2, and it appears that if we can unearth the perfect narrative, it’s becoming increasingly plausible that this sequel will materialize. Keanu Reeves himself has hinted at the script-sharing process potentially becoming tiresome, but the allure of a compelling tale seems to be pushing us closer to making this dream a reality.
Back then, Reeves and his group were playing a different melody compared to what they were doing a few years ago. In 2023, Keanu Reeves, the Matrix star, expressed interest in creating a Constantine 2 sequel, but he wasn’t sure if it would actually materialize.
With DC Studios’ approval, all we need is a script that matches Reeves’ concept of the character, and then we can bring it to life. Fingers crossed, this process won’t take as much time as it has in the past, allowing us to bring a second Constantine film to the big screen more quickly for fans to enjoy.
