The upcoming crime drama, titled “The Westies“, is all set to take charge for MGM+ and is scheduled in Hell’s Kitchen. This new series will be directed by the renowned creator of “Narcos”, Chris Brancato.

In the series, Simmons takes on the role of Eamon Sweeny, a captivating yet merciless head of the Westies. This show, jointly created by Brancato and Michael Panes, is set in the early 1980s, when the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in Hell’s Kitchen sparked a significant financial upsurge for the Irish-American community known as the Westies. Reports suggest that Simmons’ character embodies “a vintage allure and neighborhood devotion, concealing ruthless criminal aspirations and cold-blooded violence.

The depiction of “The Westies” suggests an action-packed series filled with intense confrontations, as well as underlying strife with law enforcement. Although they are vastly outnumbered by the Italian mafia’s Five Families, the Westies’ reputation for raw violence and strategic prowess has allowed them to maintain a precarious truce, enabling them to share in the ill-gotten gains. However, tension between the headstrong younger members and traditional leaders could spark a powder keg, potentially leading to their involvement in an FBI investigation that is growing increasingly complex.

Eight episodes of the series titled “The Westies” are planned, with filming slated to commence in Toronto this July. Upon announcing J.K. Simmons’ casting, the head of MGM+ Michael Wright expressed his admiration, stating that “J.K. Simmons is one of the most talented actors currently active. His genuine and powerful performance infuses a priceless essence into this intricate and thrilling narrative. We eagerly anticipate witnessing him embody this remarkable character.

In his own words, Brancato mirrored MGM+’s thoughts by saying, “J.K. Simmons doesn’t simply portray authority; he exudes it. We’re fortunate to work with an actor who infuses the seriousness and menace required for this setting.
