This coming Wednesday, Samuel Castro, the co-director of Iberseries & Platino Industria, will be presenting a masterclass at Brazil’s significant creativity event Rio2C. He has emphasized that this year’s strategic focus for this annual conference, forum, and market is shifting towards Europe and international distribution.
Castro emphasized that the Madrid event, taking place from September 30 to October 3, will continue to prioritize preserving cultural heritage, fostering trade relationships, and presenting Ibero-American talent on a global scale.
Despite shrinking markets, Iberseries & Platino Industry is broadening its influence, particularly in non-English language films and series. According to Castro, “The role of Iberseries & Platino Industria as a connection between Latin America and the U.S., catering specifically to the Hispanic market, and now with a definite focus on Europe, presents an opportune time to extend our reach by bolstering the global distribution of Spanish-language content.
Over the past few decades, film producers and sales agents have been tackling falling overseas theater debuts and reduced per-territory payment prices by investing in equity, particularly for Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American films through international co-production. Generally speaking, the more production partners a movie has, the larger its market appeal, ambition, and potential interest. Spain has emerged as a keen collaborator in this area.
Due to a 25% decrease in initial television broadcast deals worldwide during Peak TV, industry expert Guy Bisson of Ampere Analysis noted at the Berlinale Series Production event that television producers are now seeking to secure international production collaborators more aggressively.
Iberseries Platino & Industria wants to take a market bull by the horns, however.
Even though the present situation is advantageous for project funding, we understand that the true hurdle comes with global distribution. To tackle this issue, we’re strengthening our partnerships with international sales agents, along with networks and investors who are dedicated to procuring and backing Spanish-speaking content in this particular edition.
A significant number of these shows originate from Europe and are not widely streamed globally. In 2023, more than 80% of series production commissions in Europe were made by public broadcasting companies and private networks, as reported during the opening session of Series Mania Forum, according to data shared by the European Audiovisual Observatory.
Castro emphasized that our goal is to establish relationships with Ibero-American regions and Europe. We strongly feel these connections will enhance our work and create fresh opportunities for distribution via collaborative productions or partnerships. Europe, along with international distribution, serve as the cornerstones of our strategy this year.
At the Rio2C event on May 29, there will be a panel discussion about investing in audiovisual projects across Europe and the U.S. One form of investment that might be covered is private equity. The panelists for this session include Laura Rossi, Head of Audiovisual Investment at MUV Capital, Gustavo Mello from Boutique Filmes, Edison Viana, head of business development and content strategy at Moonshot, and Fernando Figueiredo, commercial head of Belat Brasil – a private investment fund.
2025’s Iberseries & Platino Industria have secured the involvement of various private investment funds and film/TV producers such as Arcano Partners, Balance Media, Elipsis Capital, Filmika Audiovisual, Holahoop Film, IPR.VC, Kenta Asset & Capital Finance, La Charito Films, Moby Dick Film Capital, Mogambo, Wandermoon Finance, and Yunit. This was confirmed during a presentation at the Cannes Festival’s Marché du Film on May 16th.
I’m delighted to confirm that I will be joining esteemed industry professionals such as Pilar Blasco, Banijay Iberia CEO, Ramón Campos, Bambú Producciones CEO, Alexander Marín, VP of distribution at Colombia’s RCN International, José Fragoso, programming director at Portuguese pubcaster RTP, RTVE director of film and fiction José Pastor, Raúl Berdonés, executive chairman of Secuoya Content Group, and Secuoya Studios CEO Brendan Fitzgerald at this event.
