The Mediterranea Film Festival has unveiled its global judging panel, featuring directors such as Catherine Hardwicke and set designers like Rick Carter.
The team heading up the upcoming festival in Valletta, Malta (from June 21st to 29th) is comprised of festival director Ray Calleja and festival curator Mark Adams.
The festival offers three distinct sections: the Main Exhibit, which showcases movies spanning the Mediterranean region, non-Competitive Screenings featuring a variety of international films, and Mare Nostrum (or ‘Our Sea’), focusing on films that highlight sustainability and ecological topics.
Alongside open viewings at the festival, there will also be a professional segment, situated within the historic Fort Ricasoli, featuring seminars, discussions, and workshops led by prominent professionals in the field.
The group responsible for judging, known as the Main Competition jury, will determine who receives the Golden Bee Awards. These awards will then be presented during a grand ceremony taking place on June 29th.
In addition to Hardwicke, renowned director behind “Twilight,” “Thirteen,” and “Lords of Dogtown” set to screen at the festival, as well as Carter, an Academy Award winner for “Avatar” and “Lincoln,” the jury comprises: costume designer Charlese Antoinette, whose work can be seen in “Air” and “Judas and the Black Messiah,” earning a nomination for a Costume Designers Guild Award; set decorator Elli Griff, nominated for an Oscar for “Napoleon”; production designer James Price, winner of an Oscar with “Poor Things”; and Mario Philip Azzopardi, Maltese director recognized for “ZOS: Zone of Separation,” “Habbilni Ha Nirbah,” and “Il-Gaġġa,” which is known as the first full-length feature film made entirely in Maltese.
The panel for the Mare Nostrum festival will comprise Grainne Humphreys, director of the Dublin Film Festival, and Ania Trzebiatowska, a senior programming officer at the Sundance Film Festival.
As a cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the Mediterrane Film Festival was birthed from a straightforward yet potent concept: fostering connections among creative spirits hailing from the Mediterranean and Europe, and helping transform those ideas into tangible realities. We embody opportunity, cooperation, and imagination.
Calleja stated: “In the centennial year of filmmaking in Malta, it’s a privilege to have an outstanding group of judges join us, representing the richness, variety, and worldwide influence of contemporary cinema. Alongside our festival curator, Mark Adams, we are dedicated to creating a lineup that not only acknowledges Malta’s cinematic heritage but also amplifies fresh, courageous voices from the Mediterranean region and beyond.
