In a different version of events, Sherri Papini has revised her narrative years after it was discovered that her kidnapping was a hoax. Her divorce attorney, Chase Kinney, recently discussed his involvement in the situation on ID’s new documentary series titled “Exposed: Caught in a Lie.” Viewers should be cautioned that some parts of this content might be emotionally challenging.
On November 2, 2015, Shaylene Papini disappeared during a jog near her residence in Redding, California, causing deep concern among her husband, Keith Papini, and their two kids, as they braced for the worst. Exactly 22 days later, she reappeared, found shackled, severely undernourished, sporting bruises all over, and with a mark on her back from branding.
As per her narratives, two women of Hispanic descent allegedly abducted her. However, law enforcement discovered inconsistencies in her tale. In the year 2022, she accepted a plea bargain acknowledging the hoax and was subsequently sentenced to serve 18 months in prison, as well as paying a fine of $300,000.
In the recently released true crime documentary series titled “Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie,” Sherri asserts that she was genuinely kidnapped, implicating her former boyfriend James Reyes as the perpetrator. Despite the FBI’s skepticism about her account, a key supporter of hers is Chase Kinney.
Who is Chase Kinney?
As a devoted fan, I’d like to share that I admire Chase Kathryn Kinney, who, alongside her father Van, co-runs the esteemed law firm Kinney & Kinney, based in Redding. With a particular focus on family law, she was selected by Sherri Papini in 2022 for her representation during her divorce proceedings with Keith Papini.
According to her recent biography, Chase is approximately 38 years old currently. Notably, she has managed to secure ten prestigious awards within the four years following her licensure as an attorney. With almost two decades of experience, she spent 13 years working as a paralegal in family law before becoming an attorney.
Together with Sherri, Chase has taken on several prominent clientele, among them an “acknowledged social figure,” but the exact individual in question remains undisclosed.
One significant accomplishment listed on her profile is getting selected to represent a prominent social figure. This opportunity is set to feature her in an upcoming documentary series airing on HBO.
Besides working as a lawyer, Chase has been passionate about dancing for over three decades. Last year, she participated in a charity dance competition modeled after “Dancing with the Stars” at the Cascade Theatre.

In a documentary series, I found myself discussing the case of Sherri Papini who was almost heading to prison. Upon meeting her for the first time, my dad and I were left scratching our heads, wondering just how out there this woman might be.
It seems that everyone has formed an opinion about her, and this is largely due to media coverage and Keith Papini’s story, which has been widely publicized around the globe.
In this rephrased version, Chase inquired from Sherri about her anticipated responsibilities as her family lawyer, which primarily involved securing a divorce and subsequently regaining custody of her kids. As for now, it’s important to note that Keith Papini maintains full custody of the two children.
At that moment, Chase asked her to postpone taking care of the children, since Sherri was on the verge of going to jail. However, rather than focusing on this situation, she wanted to delve deeper into Sherri’s character. Consequently, Sherri revealed to her the entire story about the staged kidnapping incident.
What she says about Sherri Papini
According to reports, Sherri claimed that Reyes was responsible for the incident, and Chase still stands by this account today. “I’m certain of what transpired,” Chase states. “I’ve been in that situation before, so I understand those feelings.
In the book “Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie,” an event is recounted that took place in 2006 during Sherri’s stay in Cabo, Mexico. She explains, “I found myself in a difficult predicament while I was in Mexico.
It seems I must have been around eighteen years old. That evening found me celebrating on a yacht… However, the events of that night are somewhat hazy due to being unintentionally drugged. I recall waking up and then losing consciousness again. My memories from that time are rather patchy.
I had a severely distressing encounter; a band of strangers attacked me. Upon waking the following day, I was searching for my swimsuit and garments, climbing the stairway to the captain’s living quarters.
Chase mentions that she intended to slip away unnoticed from the boat while it was moored at the marina. “Up there,” she adds, “all I could see was the vast expanse of sea.
Initially, I was alone on that boat, but now these five men have joined me – men who just viciously attacked me. As a result, I find myself in survival mode, and my only chance of getting out of this situation alive is by tricking these men into believing I’m okay with what transpired.
That’s what I ended up doing. All I could focus on was acquiring land, while all Sherri could think about were her children. I understand why she took the necessary steps to gain her freedom, as that scenario resonates deeply with me.
Has James Reyes responded?
Despite James Reyes currently facing accusations as a kidnapper, there are voices advocating for him to sue Sherri. However, it’s uncertain if this will happen. Notably, he himself mentions in the documentary that he intends to consult with his lawyer.
A detective working independently was able to locate James, and it was clear that he had grown weary of the circumstances. Earlier in the police investigation, James had been interviewed due to his DNA being discovered on Sherri’s clothing.
He informed the authorities that Sherri deceitfully accused Keith of being abusive, persuading him to allow her to remain. Furthermore, it’s claimed that she manipulated him into assisting her in causing harm to herself during the 22 days she was absent.
Investigators confirmed his account of what happened, and he successfully passed a lie detector test. However, after that incident, James relocated to Arizona, where a private investigator managed to find him.
When the PI mentions that the topic is related to Sherri, James responds, “Ah, I’ve got no stake in it. If you don’t mind, could you tell me more? It seems she’s releasing a book this year.” He had initially dismissed the subject as unreliable.
In simpler terms, James clarifies he’s avoiding the matter at hand and is instead caring for his 95-year-old grandfather. The Private Investigator mentions that Sherri has leveled accusations against him, prompting James to mention he will need to consult with his lawyer based in California.
In conclusion, he asserts that there’s no further information he wishes to share about the matter, expressing, “I will reach out to my attorney, and then we’ll proceed.
With the release of the documentary and the upcoming pre-order of the book “Sherri Papini Doesn’t Exist,” people are urging James to act. On Reddit, someone commented, “Now she’s saying her ex is responsible. I predict a legal battle is on the horizon.
I mentioned earlier that she’s accusing James Reyes, isn’t she? It’s such a foolish move. As for him, I hope he takes some action, legally speaking… I definitely don’t want any harm or harassment to befall Sherri Papini.”
The goal was to maintain the original meaning while using more formal and polite language, making it easier for a wider audience to understand.
A third person chimed in, “I thought she’d implicate James (or Keith) in betrayal, but I never imagined she’d claim he forcibly abducted her when there is such strong evidence showing otherwise.
