Lav Diaz to Direct ‘An Amazon’ With Sine Olivia Pilipinas and Silverbelt Films Producing (EXCLUSIVE)

Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz is gearing up for “An Amazon,” a new project, after the global debut of “Magellan” featuring Gael Garcia Bernal at the Cannes Film Festival.

As a movie critic embarking on an exciting journey, I’ll be sharing insights about a forthcoming project that promises to captivate audiences worldwide. This film will be uniquely crafted in the beautiful landscapes of my homeland, the Philippines, under the banner of Sine Olivia Pilipinas – a production company close to my heart. We are joining forces with Silverbelt Films, a distinguished French production house founded by Pierre-Yves Bezat, who brings an impressive background from Films Boutique, to bring this vision to life on the silver screen.

The upcoming movie is adapted from an obscure short tale penned by Alexandre Dumas. This will mark Diaz’s debut English production, boasting a star-studded cast that includes globally recognized actors.

In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, “An Amazon” is a tale that follows a youthful protagonist who encounters an enigmatic lady adorned in mystery at a grand ball. This elusive woman veils her true identity and makes a chilling vow to take his life should he expose their clandestine relationship.

In our initial chats about the tale by Dumas, filmmaker Lav Diaz found himself deeply inspired by the project titled “An Amazon”. Remarkably, even after nearly 200 years, this story seems strikingly contemporary to him.

According to Diaz, the Dumas story has been resonating strongly with him since his discussion with Pierre-Yves Bezat about this work. The tale of ‘An Amazon’ holds a profound emotional depth and an enigmatic air that seems more relevant than ever as our contemporary dictators continue to reveal their true faces on a daily basis.

At the close of this year, ‘An Amazon’ is slated for production, having reached its final phase of funding.

As a passionate film lover, I can’t help but marvel at the cinematic masterpieces created by the talented director, Diaz. Among his impressive repertoire, films such as “From What Is Before,” which took home Locarno’s prestigious Golden Leopard in 2014, “A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery,” honored with Berlin’s Alfred Bauer Award in 2016, and “The Woman Who Left,” recipient of Venice’s esteemed Golden Lion in 2016, stand out as truly captivating works.

Established in January 2023, Silverbelt Films not only produces films but also disseminates short movies, such as “Free Drum Kit” by Carmen Leroi, which was chosen for competition during Cannes’ Critics’ Week.
