When Clint Eastwood declared that he was taking on his initial Western film project, there was a great deal of anticipation regarding its appearance. Although Eastwood’s debut as a director was the psychological thriller “Play Misty for Me,” it was the Western genre that truly resonated with him. It was Westerns that propelled Eastwood to stardom, with his portrayal of The Man with No Name in Sergio Leone’s “Dollars” trilogy solidifying his status as the leading Western actor of his time. However, few could have predicted the spectacle that would unfold in “High Plains Drifter.

Initially, High Plains Drifter appears similar to Clint Eastwood’s classic Western characters. For instance, in A Fistful of Dollars, a mysterious figure enters a town, confronts dangerous outlaws, and maintains law and order. In High Plains Drifter, this enigmatic character also arrives in a town plagued by troublemakers and takes action to restore peace. However, unlike his previous roles, the stranger in High Plains Drifter subtly suggests that he might not be an ordinary human being, a notion hinted at throughout the movie upon its conclusion.

Clint Eastwood Added Supernatural Aspects To High Plains Drifter

The Stranger Might Have Returned From The Grave

The film “High Plains Drifter” broke new ground for Western movies, as its protagonist, Clint Eastwood’s character known as The Stranger, did things unprecedented in such films at the time. Unlike other Westerns where a stranger would help a struggling town, this man instead killed those hired to protect the townspeople and even raped a woman named Callie while they watched helplessly. This immediately established that The Stranger is not a traditional hero of the genre.

The situation turned grim when The Stranger experienced a harrowing dream involving a U.S. Marshal named Jim Duncan. An infamous bandit brutally murdered the marshal, and the townsfolk stood idly by. This incident underscored why The Stranger held little regard for many of the town’s inhabitants, but he had a different mission in mind. He focused on taking down the outlaws, and there was no escape for those involved.

In a chilling Western-style approach reminiscent of a horror flick, Clint Eastwood masterfully directed this film. A pivotal moment occurred within a saloon, where The Stranger brutally lashed a man to death on the streets. Each crack of the whip was juxtaposed with an expression of terror on someone’s face. As the town burned in the background, The Stranger systematically eliminated each outlaw, much like the slasher villains that would emerge over the following two decades. However, it was the final scene that truly left viewers stunned.

High Plains Drifter’s Supernatural Elements Made Clint Eastwood’s Character More Intriguing

Eastwood Also Brought The Character Back In Pale Rider

In the finale of High Plains Drifter, the mysterious stranger departs the town following the execution of all the outlaws. As he exits, his path crosses with Mordecai, the humble dwarf whom the stranger had appointed as both sheriff and mayor. When Mordecai gazes at the stranger, he queries about the man’s identity, to which the stranger enigmatically replies, “Yes, you do.At this moment, it appears that Mordecai comes to understand the truth. The sheriff stands beside a grave marked “Rest in Peace” for Marshal Jim Duncan.

As a passionate film buff, I find myself captivated by the enigma of Clint Eastwood’s Western masterpiece, “High Plains Drifter.” In this timeless tale, a mysterious stranger arrives in a desolate desert town, seemingly consumed by the shimmering heat waves. The eerie atmosphere raises questions about his true nature – was he merely Jim Duncan returned from the grave to seek vengeance, or something more supernatural?

The beauty of “High Plains Drifter” lies in its ability to leave such intriguing questions up to the viewer’s interpretation. Yet, years later, Eastwood directed another Western gem called “Pale Rider,” featuring yet another enigmatic figure. This time, he openly acknowledged that this character was a ghost, thus shedding light on a mystery that had long captivated us in “High Plains Drifter.
