Completed its run, and the outcome sparked quite a bit of discussion. If it had stayed true to the original story in a key scene, the episode might have stirred up more controversy.
Throughout the games, there’s an abundance of intense violence, but in The Last of Us Part 2, one particularly disturbing scene involves Ellie (portrayed by Bella Ramsey) and a dog named Alice. When Alice attacks, Ellie reacts in self-defense and ends up killing the dog. Although it was necessary for Ellie’s survival, many viewers might find the depiction of the dog’s death unsettling, even to the point where showrunner Craig Mazin expressed concerns that such a graphic scene could alienate some viewers from the series. This perspective was shared by Mazin during a press conference discussing the Season 2 finale.
In the game, upon Ellie’s arrival at the aquarium, a dog suddenly assaults her, and she ends up killing it. This unidentified canine is part of a sequence of distressing events. Since this is a live-action production, the violence becomes strikingly graphic due to its realistic nature. It’s unsettling to see such violence portrayed by actual people.
Mazin went on to say, “I recall discussing this matter with a superior of ours when we initially displayed a radiation burn victim from the Chernobyl site on camera. The shot seemed to linger and show every detail, and we found ourselves thinking, ‘We have enough footage, but why not hold back a bit?’ It’s as if we were causing distress to the audience, bordering on the sensational or explicit, so we didn’t want to seem exploitative, and we didn’t want to cross any boundaries. Therefore, we made certain decisions.
It’s Not a Bad Idea to Spare the Dog
It’s important to find ways to express Ellie’s grief after Joel’s death without resorting to killing the dog in the TV series adaptation. Many viewers dislike or avoid movies and shows that include animal deaths, considering them controversial. A useful resource for those concerned is a website called , which allows users to search various films, TV shows, and more to check if they contain scenes of dogs being killed.
This version maintains the original idea but aims to make it more accessible and easier to understand for readers.
The Last of Us is streaming on HBO Max.
