The anticipation is building, and fans’ speculations are running rampant regarding its upcoming events. People are brimming with various guesses about the next installments and how the storyline will conclude.
More recently, Squid Game showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk and actor Lee Byung-hun held a discussion to delve into popular fan theories regarding the series. One theory, originating from a fan in Mexico, suggested that the Front Man manipulated his games to win. Regarding this theory, Byung-hun stated, “I’m not sure if he cheated, but it’s possible he had an intense desire for survival.
Later on, they visited a topic that had been frequently debated: the theory suggesting that the sketches in the dorm room’s walls provide clues about which games will be featured during the upcoming season. According to certain sources, these games are rumored to be Monkey Bars, Human Chess, and Yunnori.
Hwang clarified that the concept from Season 1, where they depicted the games on the walls, was a nod to an Easter egg he created. However, he emphasized that such repetition wouldn’t occur in Season 2. He explained, “To be honest, the wall drawings have no connection with the actual games. I don’t typically reuse devices like that.”
Another suggestion was proposed to the team: the fan theory that Gi-hun and the Front Man could be the sons of Il-nam, the creator of the lethal games. This idea is supported by the fact that they all mentioned being lactose intolerant at some point. “I actually inquired about it during filming,” Byung-hun shared. “He hinted to me that it’s one of the many elements surrounding the Front Man intended to intrigue viewers.
Instead of saying, “Hwang refused to say whether there was any truth to that one,” you could write:
“When asked if a statement might be true, Hwang playfully replied, ‘Just because two individuals have lactose intolerance doesn’t automatically mean they are related. Many people share this trait.’
Will Gi-hun Become The Front Man?
Later on, they moved to discussing one widely accepted fan theory: the notion that Gi-hun could triumph in the games and succeed Sang-Woo as the Front Man. “That’s a common rumor, even before Season 2 came out. I do know how it ends, but I won’t share,” said Byung-hun.
After acquiring so much wealth, is it common for people to crave power, like the Front Man? I’m curious as to why this assumption is made.” This was a question posed by Jung-jae, yet it appeared that his companions were indeed considering this possibility.
Hwang stated, “Since In-ho emerged victorious and took on the role of Front Man, there’s a possibility that Gi-hun might also succumb to corruption and mimic In-ho’s actions. This could be the general assumption.
Initially, Byung-hun revealed a surprising fact: “One of the current theories contains both truth and falsehood.” However, he chose not to disclose which one. Later, Hwang added his thoughts: “Some of these theories hold a grain of truth. Season 3 of Squid Game is set to be even more impactful and unforeseeable.
Fans will just have to wait until June 27 to see what happens.
Squid Game is streaming on Netflix.
