Marcel Ophuls, the acclaimed documentary filmmaker who won an Academy Award, has passed away. His grandson, Andreas-Benjamin Seyfert, reported to The Hollywood Reporter that he died tranquilly in his home located in the south of France. He was 97 years old.
In a different phrasing, Ophulus produced numerous documentaries exploring complex moral dilemmas stemming from conflicts. His works encompassed topics such as the Vichy regime in France, the Northern Ireland conflict known as the Troubles, the Nuremberg Trials, and the Vietnam War. Notably, “The Sorrow and the Pity,” his film focusing on French collaborators during WWII, was barred from being screened in its depicted country for a dozen years following its completion. Critic Pauline Kael deemed it as one of the most challenging films ever produced.
Born in Frankfurt in 1927, Ophuls and his family had to escape Germany in 1933, followed by a departure from Paris in 1940. They eventually settled in Los Angeles in 1941, where he made his debut in cinema as part of Hitler Youth in one of Frank Capra’s war-time propaganda films. Post-war, Ophuls returned to Europe and produced his first documentary, Munich or Peace in Our Time, for German television.
In 1988, the documentary film “Hotel Terminus” received the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. This movie delved into the life of Klaus Barbie, spanning a period of 40 years from the end of World War II up until his trial for human rights violations. Notably, during this time, America protected him due to the effectiveness of his interrogation skills learned during his Nazi service. Roger Ebert described it as a film by a man who persists in discussion even when others prefer to shift focus towards more pleasant topics. He went on to say that it was a relentless, irritable, persistent, sarcastic critique of politeness, and he was glad that Ophuls was temperamental enough to produce such a film.
