Among the surprising blockbusters of recent times, the standout has been “Ya Boy Kongming!”, released in 2022 – an unusual take on the isekai genre known as a reverse isekai. This unexpected hit has spawned numerous adaptations of its source material, one of which is now available on the world’s largest streaming platform catering to international audiences.
Approximately a year after the premiere of “Ya Boy Kongming!” anime, a live-action TV series was launched in Japan. Since then, this show has been about two years old and hasn’t been accessible to international fans. However, now there’s good news! It’s finally coming to US viewers, offering them an opportunity to immerse themselves deeper into the world of Kongming than ever before.
Ya Boy Kongming Finally Comes to International Streaming as Live-Action Series
The live-action TV drama titled “Ya Boy Kongming!” is a production of Fuji TV. This show adapts the story originally presented in manga and anime into real life. Just like its source material, it revolves around Zhuge Kongming, an ancient military strategist from the Han Dynasty who mysteriously ends up in present-day Tokyo. By employing his battlefield strategies, he transforms a woman named Eiko into a popular pop music star. Given the plotline, it’s classified as a “reverse isekai,” where someone goes from another world to our reality rather than the usual reverse. Osamu Mukai plays Kongming in the series, while Moka Kamishiraishi takes on the role of Eiko Tsukimi. Airing from September to November 2023, the show consists of 10 episodes, unlike the anime adaptation which had 12.
Previously exclusive to Japan, the TV adaptation of “Ya Boy Kongming!” is set to arrive on Netflix in the U.S. on May 30th. Unfortunately, Netflix does not offer the anime version of this franchise for streaming. Instead, you can find it streaming on Hulu, or purchase episodes (either individually or as a series) to watch on Amazon Prime Video. The original “Ya Boy Kongming!” manga series by Yuto Yotsuba and Ryo Ogawa, which started serialization in December 2019, continues with 21 tankobon volumes so far, 19 of which have been released in the West, with more to come.
