WARNING! SPOILERS ahead for Chicago PD season 12, episode 22, “Vows.”

In episode 22 of season 12 titled “Vows” on Chicago PD, Chapman’s remarks to Voight reveal that her perception of him is misguided. The central storyline in this season showcased Voight (Jason Beghe) battling against Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy), who was a corrupt cop with connections to local gang leaders. Reid used his power to spy on Voight and even attempted to dismantle the Intelligence Unit, which allowed him to carry out his unauthorized activities without hindrance.

In this storyline, “Vows” represents the high point of the ongoing narrative where Voight and his group covertly attempt to counteract Reid. A new character, ASA Chapman, who has only recently started dating Voight, disapproves of his strategies and fears that by associating with Reid, he may be lowering himself to Reid’s level, following the latter’s assassination in the final episode of Chicago PD season 12. However, Chapman is a recent cast member on Chicago PD and remains unaware of Voight’s true character.

Chapman Says That Voight’s Actions In The Chicago PD Season 12 Finale Are Uncharacteristic

She Has An Inaccurate Idea About Who He Is

According to Chapman, Voight’s behavior can be attributed to his conflicts with Reid. She feels that while Voight was once a man who would go to any lengths – legal or otherwise – to apprehend criminals, she now sees him as having changed for the worse. This transformation and his handling of Reid’s interference leaves her dismayed and frustrated.

Initially, Chapman and Voight collaborated on a legal takedown of Reid, but when Voight discovered he needed to break the law, he excluded Chapman from the loop. Consequently, it quickly becomes apparent to Chapman that Voight orchestrated Reid’s death. This poses potential legal challenges for Voight if Chapman decides to launch an investigation. Moreover, this situation strains their relationship, as she finds his actions unjustifiable and inconsistent with his usual behavior.

Nevertheless, it seems Chapman’s evaluation is off base. It’s important to note that she joined the cast of Chicago PD during season 9. In fact, Voight, prior to his own series spin-off, was initially suspected to be a corrupt police officer. However, in the subsequent series, he was portrayed as someone who frequently took unorthodox actions with the intention of serving justice in an unconventional way.

Will Classic Voight Continue To Be Present In Chicago PD Season 13?

It’s Likely He Will Be More Like He Used To, But Not Completely

It seems clear now that Voight can revert back to his old ways, so we might expect Chicago PD season 13 to amplify this trait of him bending or breaking the law when necessary. Additionally, given recent events like Reid’s death and potential threats from other adversaries trying to disrupt his work, it could be likely that Voight will resort to violence to guard his team. It appears unlikely that he would abandon his rule-bending nature after this reemergence.

Given that Voight is suspected of orchestrating Reid’s murder, it’s plausible that season 13 could feature a storyline revolving around retribution. If this were the case, Voight might resort to violent measures to safeguard those working under him. Reid had connections with gang members and other dangerous criminals, making it likely that someone might seek vengeance against Voight and his team, or even attempt to target Renny, the identified murderer.

It’s plausible that Detective Voight won’t completely revert to his classic self due to the need for shows like Chicago PD to address contemporary concerns regarding police violence. Given the backlash against series perceived as romanticizing or endorsing corruption or mistreatment of citizens, Voight might find himself in a balance between his original character and the more subdued version that has emerged recently.
