One of Ben Affleck‘s earliest and critically acclaimed directorial projects will find a fresh streaming platform approximately 15 years following its initial cinematic release. The tense, captivating crime-thriller, “Gone Baby Gone,” is due to stream starting next month.
It’s been confirmed that “The Town” will begin streaming on Netflix starting June 1st, joining other fresh releases set to premiere on that day. At the moment, the movie is accessible for Peacock subscribers, and it can also be rented or bought through Prime Video and Apple TV.
In the second movie Ben Affleck directed following his acclaim with the Oscar-nominated “The Town,” he takes the helm of an illustrious ensemble, featuring Jeremy Renner, Titus Welliver, Jon Hamm, Rebecca Hall, and Blake Lively. This Warner Bros. production finds Affleck as Doug MacRay, a Boston bank robber who commands a gang of burglars and only cares for his brother and fellow criminal James “Jem” Coughlin (Renner). However, Doug begins to ponder the legitimacy of his criminal lifestyle when James inadvertently kidnaps bank employee Claire Keesey (Hall), discovering that she resides in their community and is aware of their illicit activities.
Following the police’s placement of Claire into a witness protection program upon Doug’s request to safeguard her from Jem, Doug develops a relationship with this new acquaintance. As their bond deepens into love, Doug finds himself torn: he wonders if he should abandon his criminal life, as his gang contemplates a significant heist at Fenway Park. He recognizes that choosing to discontinue his illicit activities could endanger Claire.
The Town Further Boosted Affleck’s Directing Credentials
In the cinematic world, “The Town” emerged as a major success for Ben Affleck, garnering a 92% positive review from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, making it his second-highest rated directorial project, trailing only 2023’s “Air” (93%). This gritty crime-thriller, jointly written by Affleck and produced by Basil Iwank, who is also known for producing the “John Wick” series, generated a massive global revenue of $154 million against an initial investment of just $37 million. Furthermore, this film served as a significant career milestone for Jeremy Renner, earning him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards and a nod for a Golden Globe.
Ben Affleck’s reputation as a film director expanded significantly following the success of “The Town,” with his 2012 spy thriller, “Argo,” winning three Oscars (including Best Picture) at the 85th Academy Awards. His latest directorial project, “Air,” a biographical sports drama about Nike’s attempts to secure a deal with Michael Jordan, was released recently. Despite being a box-office flop, it garnered two Golden Globe nominations and received widespread acclaim.
The upcoming movie that Ben Affleck is directing, titled “Animals“, completed filming in April. This project brings Affleck together with his longtime friend and creative partner Matt Damon for a joint acting and producing role under their Artists Equity label. Apart from them, the cast includes Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, and Ray Fisher, who was also a part of “Justice League” alongside Affleck.
The Town debuts via Netflix on Jun. 1.
