Disney’s reboot of “Lilo & Stitch” is set to break records for the largest Memorial Day weekend debut, raking in an impressive $55 million during its initial release and preview screenings. However, cinemas are in for a double treat this weekend, as they also welcome Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” which earned $24.8 million on its opening day, marking the highest gross for Tom Cruise’s ongoing espionage franchise.
In second place for highest opening day earnings in 2025, “Lilo & Stitch” debuted at 4,110 theaters with $57.1 million, trailing slightly behind “A Minecraft Movie’s” April launch of $57.1 million. The PG-rated family comedy is poised to outperform Tom Cruise in two areas: it aims to surpass “The Final Reckoning’s” opening weekend earnings more than twice over this weekend, and if successful, it would also exceed the four-day 2022 opening of “Top Gun: Maverick” ($160 million) to establish a new record for Memorial Day weekend openings.
Disney’s performance with “Lilo & Stitch” remake is particularly noteworthy, considering their previous attempt at reworking an animated classic, “Snow White,” didn’t fare well, earning only $204 million globally against a production budget of $250 million. Unlike the remake of a nearly 90-year-old film, the original source material for “Lilo & Stitch” is relatively recent and less expensive to produce (with a budget of $100 million compared to Snow White’s $250 million). The original animated version from 2002 was a decent box office performer with a worldwide gross of $273 million, but the remake is expected to surpass this figure during its opening weekend alone.
The long-standing success of “Lilo & Stitch” sets it up for a highly anticipated box office hit. Critics’ reviews are positive, and audiences appear excited, evident in the excellent “A” rating given by Cinema Score, a moviegoer survey firm. This is a promising sign for upcoming weeks as schools start summer break.
Dean Fleischer Camp serves as the film’s director, while Maia Kealoha, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis take on the acting roles. Chris Sanders, who previously worked as a writer and director for the animated version, returns to voice his character – the feral blue alien named Stitch.
In the second spot is “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” making a strong push to break franchise records with a debut in 3,857 cinemas. The three-day earnings record was set by “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” in 2018 at $61 million, but “The Final Reckoning” aims to surpass this with an estimated $63 million over the first three days. By the four-day holiday period, it’s expected to reach around $77 million. Internationally, it has already earned $75.9 million. Additionally, revenue from luxury tickets in Imax and premium large format theaters adds to its earnings.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the unwavering dedication of Paramount and Skydance Media to “The Final Reckoning.” With an astounding $400 million production budget, this film is already among the costliest ever produced, not even considering its worldwide promotional campaign. The budget has swelled over time due to the meticulous work of Tom Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie (who’s been at the helm for the last three installments) as they navigated COVID protocols, two Hollywood strikes, and escalating inflation during a multi-year production process.
The record-breaking global earnings for “Mission: Impossible” were set by “Fallout” at approximately $791 million. To achieve box office success, the upcoming movie “The Final Reckoning” will need to outperform this figure significantly. Its predecessor, “Dead Reckoning,” which released in 2023, opened domestically with $74 million over five days before experiencing a decline following the releases of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” Ultimately, it earned $172 million domestically and $571 million worldwide. To avoid a similar outcome, “The Final Reckoning” aims for greater success.
Despite generally favorable feedback for “The Final Reckoning,” its response hasn’t quite reached the lofty heights of the franchise’s typical acclaim as a favorite among critics. However, Cinema Score reported an extremely positive “A-” rating from audiences.
As a passionate cinema enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating what could potentially be the most spectacular Memorial Day weekend at the box office in history! The current record was set back in 2013, with a staggering $306 million total grosses across titles like “Fast & Furious 6,” “The Hangover Part III,” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.” It’s an incredible turnaround from last year, which marked the worst Memorial Day weekend in over three decades. This time around, it’s not just about new releases like “Lilo & Stitch” and “The Final Reckoning”; it’s also about the strong holdover releases that could give us that extra edge!
On its first day, “Final Destination Bloodlines,” produced by Warner Bros. and New Line, earned approximately $5.5 million. Predicted total earnings for the weekend are around $19 million, representing a 63% decrease from its impressive opening weekend. This is enough to bring the domestic total of this horror sequel over $100 million within the week. Notably, “Bloodlines” has already surpassed the domestic gross of any other film in the franchise, only one week since its release. This indicates a successful revival for the dormant horror series.
The Marvel movie, “Thunderbolts,” is now in fourth place after earning an additional $2.4 million on Friday, marking a 42% decrease compared to its weekly daily earnings. To date, the superhero team-up film has grossed over $164 million domestically. Despite receiving better reviews than its predecessor “Captain America: Brave New World,” it will need to perform exceptionally well to surpass that movie’s $200 million domestic box office total.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Sinners,” in its sixth week, is still making waves at the box office. On Friday alone, it raked in an impressive $2.4 million, hinting at a potential 40% decline over the weekend. The remarkable film by Ryan Coogler surpassed the $250 million domestic gross mark on Friday! This weekend, it’s set to outshine “The Hangover Part II” ($254 million) and claim the title of the 11th-highest-grossing R-rated film ever. If it manages to surpass “The Hangover” ($277 million), it’ll break into the top 10, and let’s not forget, it might also overtake “Gravity” ($274 million) to become the highest-grossing original release in North America since “Inception” ($292 million) back in 2010. Exciting times for movie lovers!
This weekend, “The Last Rodeo,” a heartfelt family drama about bull-riding produced by Angel Studios, is set to premiere. On its opening day, it grossed $2.07 million from 2,205 different locations. With an “A” rating from Cinema Score, which is typically average for an Angel production, the movie aims to debut at sixth place.
Simultaneously, the movie “Friendship” from A24, featuring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, expanded to 995 more theaters, now playing in a total of 1,055 cinemas during its third weekend. On Friday alone, it grossed approximately $1.6 million.
